mjp220: How many logged hours do you have so far with the motor?

Just ordered in the $0.50 motor along with the FF-N20PN tail motors. When they come in, i'll let you guys know how they go.

I stopped keeping track.

I gotta have at least 20 flights - all between 10-15 minutes each.

No signs of death yet.

mpj220,

I am happy for your success. Thanks for your info and research.
Do you know if the $0.50 motor and FF-N20PN tail motor will run with the stock HB board? I am currently using all stock with basic HB board with Ikaus mirco gyro.

tye,
I haven't tried the FF-N20PN yet. I am using the gws EDP50-XC with 3x2 prop for the tail. I wouldn't mind findinf a low cost direct drive for the tail though. The gws is 10 bucks. A bit expensive for such a little motor. It does come with 2 props though.

Those work, but I pulled the one of my 370 and it works great. If you do get the hpi trim the screw with a dremel.

I think it's 2mm. It's the same as the hb 370.

More info!

I decided to take one for the team. After putting at leat 4 hours of airtime on the original motor and having plenty of spares, I replaced the motor with another. I figured I could drop another 50 cents into this bird so I could take a good look at the insides of the first motor.

I am just amazed. The brushes were not worn bad at all. I would estimate less than 50% wear on them. No ugly burns on the shaft. I have seen much worse on far less time with other motors I have. Everything looked great. It cost me 50 cents to check it (I was feeling rich today) but, put to rest any questions I had on reliability.

I swear that if Johnson made these with mount holes already cut, a colored anodized can and a sticker that said MegaChopper power - they could sell them for 50 bucks and people would be happy with the purchase.

This one is a winner!!

Enjoy all,
Mark

success with johnson motor!

well, my stock dragonfly motor bit the dust tonight. My order of johnson motors and pinions came in today! good timing. Took about 30 min to do the swap, the next one will take 5-10.

a question though - are you guys taking off the metal "sleeve" on the motor can? it seems to serve no purpose.

I used an 11 tooth pinion but i have a 10 too. Running stock birdseed bats until i get my charger power supply together for my lipos.

I took that metal collar thingy off. It serves no purpose other than dead weight.

Hey mpj220,
I tried telling people about these motors on rcu and no one believe that they work! They'd rather spend $15 on a century motor that works like a snow plow in summer!

I have tried these motors out also but i have noticed that tail authority wasn't as good as before. I'm guessing that the motor requires more amps than the stock 370 motor.

Anyone else having this problem?

darkside212,
I stopped hanging out at rcu for that very reason - too many people would rather argue about stuff than share rc info. You would think that someone would be happy about learning that there is a 50 cent motor that far outperforms the stock one. I got so fed up with that site, I removed every one of my posts and generally visit rcgroups and here (since I got a heli). Great people - no arguements - rarely even see moderators stepping in.

Michael ,
Ditch the collar - not needed. Actually someone else did tests and found that the motor spins a bit slower with it.

jaged,
Drop the pinion gear down a tooth. This motor develops so much more torque that the tail motor can't keep up. I am thinking of ordering a 9 tooth. I have DD tail and I will try 3x3 prop when it arrives - that may help the tail a bit.

Jaged, yes i am experiencing that now too. I am runing an 11 tooth pinion but i'll drop that down to 10 tonight. Don't have a nine to try. I am running the stock tail so that isn't helping much either.

At low throttle - right after lift off - the tail needs some input. Add power and it swings around and i need to keep full rudder and even then it doesn't hold. My theory was the same as yours - the johnson is pulling more amps.

I'm hoping my lcs in nashua has a dd i can put on this weekend.

cheers,

I run the ms carbon blades for the hornet. That would explain why I can run a 10 tooth on it.
Current draw is actually less than the stock motor. This one just has so much more torque.
Direct Drive tail will make up quite a bit - or Century's high authority tail motor if you want to keep the stock tail rotor.

Michael,
Let me know if RCBuyers has the tail motors in stock. Also, check to see if they stock for micro heli parts. I go up there occasionally and if they had parts for these, it would be worth the trip.

Hi guys, the U shaped collar on these johnson motors is used to increase the strength of the fixed magnets at their poles. The case of the motor is a very thin piece of ferrous metal, the thicker collar helps to couple the magnets to each other, essentialy creating stronger magnet poles. If you remove the collar, you are probably reducing the available torque of this motor. I picked up a bunch of them myself and will try to find some 'usable' data with and without the collar.

Mark, no joy at RC Buyers. No edp50 and no micro parts. It is really hard to believe that an area like Boston with all its high tech does not have a really good hobby shop! Or at least 1 that I've found yet.

I'm going to drop down to the 10 tooth pinion but if that doesn't help i may be grounded on monday.
