No smoking is a work in progress, the patch has seeemed to help. However it makes you body ache wherever you put it. Candy helps to, as well as gum. After I've said all this I started smoking again, gonna get after it pretty soon again.
I think if your afraid of going cold turkey your not really ready to quit, I know that's my problem. I'm in the I wanna stop smoking stage, not the I will stop smoking stage.

the only way to stop is to stop...only you can do it...reduce your amount you smoke every...lets say 3 days....Dont just stop smoking 3 ciggeretes each time, every 3 days. it wont work...for the first couple weeks, only do a little amount. try to stop smoking 2-3 ciggerets every 9 days. So that one every 3 days. Then if you decide you will stop smoking one more ciggerete each 3 days, after the first 2 weeks, try your hardest to steady for a few days..,..more than 3 days of course...just to see if its actually working. Then get back on schedule. It will take a good month or two...to actually stop smoking. To stop the craving...could take several months. You can also try the smoke away system...Not sure if you guys have heard of it, but some people say they have stopped in 4 days from smoking for over 10 years...which is prety good...and smoke away garuntee's you to stop smoking in 7 days or your money back, and if you call now.....no seriously, its true..Its worth the shot...its like 15 bucks a bottle...They may have a web site.....try www.smokeaway.com

I tried one, Zyban helped a lot, I quit smoking for 3 months, till I got around a smoker ad now back to the norm. My parent-folks quit smoking cold turkey and act like anything less is pathetic and weak *shrug*. The Zyban worked, it's just damned expensive. I know, smokes cost more, but it's like the electric argument.. I buy my fuel throughout the year, not in one burst. (fuel vs. expensive batts) and I could not support buying it in bursts.

Try talking to your MD about the usage of bupropion (anti-depressive) and patches simultaneously. Research shows ~45% of those who take the above two are able to remain smoke-free for over a year unlike those who use patches only or quit cold turkey.

You *WILL* quit smoking one day .... just try and quit before you reach the irreversible damage threshold.

Good luck when ever you start on your smoke-free endevour.

BTW, bupropion is the generic for Zyban & Wellbutrin.

mmmmm - its different for eveyone - i decided to quit new year - cold turkey, the first night i cracked and had one (only one) the second night i cracked and had one (only one) the third night i was stronger and kept myself busy with mints and sweets, it is now the 10th and i am still going strong. If i weaken and get the thirst i picture my self mentaly standing up with my hands up palms out shouting NO - sounds mad but it really helps and re-enforces the object - not to give in. My Wife is so impressed she is going to try it from tommorrow.

Also two of my friends have quit using this method, just imagine yourself jumping up and sreaming NO with your hands up in the air palms out - to symolise you have had a enough, and that you will take no more - it psychological. firstly you have to really want to do it.

Every time i have had a crave this has helped me, i mean you dont have to actucally jump up and do it just mentally do it, but do it seriously.......

I do find sometimes that i do not know what to do with myself, but the craving have dropped so much i am confident that i will succeed, i feel i have already succeeded - good luck guys.

I smoked 3 packs a day and quit cold turkey. I went to the local candy store and bought a bag of Brachs peppermint candies. Every time I had a craving I popped down a mint. It took about 3 days for the real hard cravings to go away and 2 weeks before I put down the candies. It sounds bad but it worked. I haven't had a smoke in 7 years and quite frankly I find it difficult to be in the same room with someone who is smoking...just makes me sick to my stomache. Hang in there....and remember, you CAN do it.

You need a good reason. I was too young to remember this but have been told the story by my aunt. When I was very young my dad smoked untill he saw me playing with the cig. buts in the ash tray. He decided then he had to quit. I guess he felt I might become a smoker if it continued. He new quiting for me was the reason, but needed help. He made a bet with someone he knew and talked to, but really didn't care for, on who could quit smoking and stay off it. I know you said to leave out "cold turkey", but thats what they did! He just had a good reason besides his own benifit, namely me, and the motivation to win a bet with a person he couldn't stand losing to. He won the bet and has been smoke free for 30 yrs now. Good luck!

I tried the patch... they only way it would have worked was if I could have rolled it up and smoked it!!!!!!!! Tried Zyban... I didnt want to smoke at all... and had really cool dreams... you know like big breasted mermaids doing that lesbian stuff.... but they were few and far between... With Zyban... insomnia is a bitch!!! So I gave up the dreams and got some sleep and I still smoke... Screw it.... nothing goes better with a drink after sex than a nice smoke...

I used to smoke or dip which ever I was on at the time...

ZYBAN is the miracle, only if you want to quit. Many people say it but don't mean it. I see people all the time with lung tumors and when I ask how long they smoked, they say I don't smoke, I quit 2 weeks ago. A little too late. I have seen many patients die a cruel death, and most die from pleural fluid build up and smother to death.

I have been off for 2 years in March. Another thing to help is exercise. I started running when I quit, it makes it easier when you can't run a mile without stopping.

I'd rather die like my grandpa, peacefully in my sleep, not like the other four people in his car screaming!!

Cant believe people have such little self control.

You should talk SENECA… Looks to me you have no control over your meaningless, unwarranted, random thoughts.

I guess I'm one of the lucky ones..... When I was 7~8 my cousines and I used to play and they would pick up butts from the street and try to "smoke" them....that image made me so sick to look at I was cured on the spot!! I never did want to try after that......and I never have.....lucky I guess.......
BTW, I saw a program some time ago that did a study on Heroin addicts that were also smokers.....I don't recall the numbers, but, a VERY high percentage of them claimed it was far more difficult to quit smokeing than to quit Heroin..... people who are trying to quit are moving in the right direction and
I wish you all success...

I smoked for 17 years - and in that time tried to quit maybe a half dozen times. The last time was 8 years ago, for good and was cold turkey.
If you have ruled out cold turkey - you have not actually decided to quit (IMHO). I am truely not kidding when I say this: The secret to quitting smoking is to not smoke. It sucks for a while - but it works best in the long run! Anyway - good luck.

That's understandable ... they both create the same degree of dependance, but unlike smoking, heroin is ilegal so you can't "use" the drug all day long as you do with cigarretts. Can you imagine what your boss would say if you said: "Hey, time for a break ... need to get heroin running thorugh my veins real quick" every hour ?

Keeping the above in mind, the problem with smoking is not the physical sider ... its the psycological part.. Getting through the cravings is easy as they only last a couple of minutes and tend to diminish with time, but out of nothing quitting a regular habit is much more complicated; specially since people have been doing it for over 10 years more than 20 times per day.

I smoked for 10 years. Tried a few times to quit but never could. Worked with to many smokers. Then I tried ZYBAN and quit in a week. I did find though that you can only quit for yourself. Not the money thing or because somebody wants you to. Do it for you if you dont it will never happen.
If you try to quit for something other than yourself you either wont or will go right back to it.
(IMHO)
Good Luck
