Friend,

That is the MZ.

The 18SZ has a speaker, that is pretty dang loud and will talk to you as much as you want it to talk to you. The 18SZ retails at $1099. I got mine for $800 during a member special sale at Tower Hobbies right around the time of the release of the 18SZ.

YOU said....
so the ONLY TX futaba makes with a speaker is the 18 and at 2 grand for it they've got rocks in their head.
I simply wanted to correct the statement as it is patently false.
LOL whatever fly on, fly on
I agree.

So if your so "disappointed" then do something about it - put all your stuff up for sale in the classifieds and switch to JR/Spektrum/Hitec/Jeti/FrSky/Sanwa/Graupner/or whatever.

I could use some cheap gear

DeCeption/deceit by definition is the wanton attempt to mislead or otherwise intentionally falsify information to achieve an end. If you actually believe that Hobbico or Futaba intentionally tried to trick you into purchasing this product by conceiling details about the speaker, then you are sadly, woefully mistaken. I have nonetheless submitted a request to have the tech notes further clarified.
'clown, VControl did not even exist when the 14SG was released. The 18SZ employs talking telemetry and I am quite certain that whatever comes along to replace the 14SG will have the darn speaker. If you choose to migrate from arguably the most reliable RF link in the radio control hobby over the presence or absence of a feature on a radio released 4 years ago yet nonetheless evolved at n/c to the consumer and now costing just $569, then of course follow what you think is most important to you.

I've turned on the talking telemetry on my radio in the past. It was the electronic equivalent of Edith Bunker talking in Archie's ear. That's just me, of course. No offense to those who want or need the constant aural feedback.

My dear Ben, if futaba would have put the time and money into a speaker and not some lame 3.5 audio jack like in the 18 series of radios I'd not have a leg to stand on but Futaba obviously had plans for the 14 sg to have a voice, but dropped the ball on thinking anyone would consider an external speaker dangling about or ear buds to be anywhere close to acceptable is why flying futaba is becoming a head scratcher for me and i own more then my far share of futaba gear...in mho this thread has gone down a rat hole far enough it let me vent..I'll get off my soap box now

no troll here, just very disappointed in futaba ...once again... I have over 50 futaba receivers in my models so kinda stuck with them..
I don't own a 14sg so I can't comment on that but I do own many Futaba receivers.

To say you are "stuck with" Futaba receivers is like saying Ferrari owners are "stuck" with Ferrari engines. Not only have I not had a Futaba receiver problem in over 20 years, I haven't heard of one. Of all the challenges in this hobby, Futaba's radio connection is not one of them. Radio link with with Futaba has proven bulletproof for me.

Nor I for over 40 years the receiver side of the house is not my complaint the dual convergent Rx. of dayz gone by where awesome ... I have no problem with futaba other than "they" use a 3.5 mm audio jack to interface with the Tx. "voice", so I have to plug some external lessening device into to hear it call out my battery voltage of my heli which is ludacris.... even a Bluetooth connection would be more palatable then walking about with some boom box hanging from my Tx. just waiting to get broken off the dang thing .... or a ear bud driving me crazy while flying...

There are two things we must consider here:
- Personal Preference
- Assumption

When getting something
- know what you want
- do research on the product to make it has want you desire

Your experience with the 14SG was a LESSON

We understand you want a TX that will talk to you through an external speaker.

You have been provided some very valuable information, let's focus on what it takes to get what you Prefer.

Complaining is like a rocking chair, gives you something to do but gets you no where...... let's move forward.

@ the end of the day; do your Homework. Cool feature to have and it's installed in my SG but I don't want my radio saying Sugar Honey Ice Tea to me.

Just a few random thoughts...

The 14sg has always seemed a little out of place to me. It grew from the 8FG.

At the risk of quoting myself - below is a post from a few years ago. The post was in response to a thread noting the 8FG has been discontinued.
The 8FG was always a curious radio for me. It was always a 10 channel radio. I never understood Futaba's marketing on that. It always included 8 fully proportional channels and 2 non-proportional channels. Most Futaba radios are that way and historically would have been marketed as a 10 channel radio. The 18MZ is 16+2 and is sold as an 18 channel. The 10C? 8+2=10. So it is with nearly all Futaba upper-end radios. Not so with the 8FG. 8+2=8

Then, with a firmware upgrade, it became a 14 channel! At that point it seemed to me that Futaba was wildly undervaluing what it was selling. They were selling a 14 channel radio with all the features you'd expect of a proper 14 channel radio - but with an 8 channel name and price!

Given the above I don't suppose anyone is surprised that Futaba finally re-marketed/renamed the 8FG(Super) as the 14SG.
If you consider the legacy heritage of the 14SG it is easier to understand its features and functions. It began life as a feature rich and affordable 8 channel radio and was upgraded to a feature rich and affordable 14 channel. When the 14SG was new, Futaba was also marketing another 14 channel radio. That was the 14MZ and it retailed for $2,400. The pricing and features of the 14SG was meant to hit a spot above the 10C and below the 12Z, 12FG and 14MZ.

At the time of this writing Futaba is marketing the below radios.
6J....... $170
8J....... $280
10J...... $300
14SG..... $550
18SZ..... $1,000
18MZ..... $2,400
18MZ WC.. $3,000

Considering the 6, 8 and 10 are FHSS radios, I would suggest Futaba's most affordable serious helicopter radio is the 14SG. It is far more radio than the 10J and somewhat less than the 18SZ. It seems to fill an niche very nicely. It lacks the gimbals, screen and some of the features of the 18SZ but is almost 1/2 the price.

The comparison chart below may help others in the future.

Yes indeed. I had a 14MZ and got rid of it for a SG. The SG certainly filled a niche. I may or may not get an SZ but I'm content with what I have now.

18sz vs 14 sg

Personally I have the 18sz and the 14sg and the 18 sees very little use. The 14sg can do what the 18 does and has a much better variometer functionality (when you fly glider) The 18sz screen is harder to see in the sun and the touchscreen is not always esier than the 14sg dial.

ok here is my two cents. I have a 14 and the buzzer is all but useless. when I fly my turbine I have to take along a separate timer that you can actually hear the dang thing. I am in agreement with any one who hates Futaba because of this.
I bought the DX9 and am very pleased with the voice and LOUD buzzers that it has.
Face it guys for what you pay for a Futaba radio they should be brought up to 21 century standards, and they are not.

But I thought you're supposed to feel the buzzer since the radio is probably in your hands whilst you bend the sticks?
