I've been thinking about this lately. Can I run run a 1.05 muffler on a .91 DRS engine?

Think about it for a moment. The engines are tuned for the same gear ratios. They should be operating in the same RPM range. The DRS engine doesn't need muffler back pressure. In effect I would just end up with a larger volume pipe. That has the potential for less back-pressure and more power plus there is a good chance the engine would be quieter.

Anyone tried this yet? Any thoughts?

Hey Bill;

Mount it up and try it!

The Hatori 50 pipes are obsoleted when a bigger engine come out. You are supposed to just buy the slightly bigger pipe. 50/56/60.

The rpm range may change very slightly but they are very broad to begin with. Your pipe is working best when the noise is the least - rpm. Most guys don't get this.

I would agree with "four stroker" , and install the muffler and give it go. I have done this on fixed wing, and never noticed anything detrimental, just a slightly quieter, and more mellow tone.

Our heli mufflers are essentially a large expansion chamber, and if you compare them to the mufflers that come with the same displacement fixed wing engine, you will see the size difference immediately. The heli muffler is much larger. Even fixed wing mufflers have become larger over the years.

the only thing that will happen with a bigger pipe is either you won't be able to tune it for power or it has enough back pressure to tune well

yes I realise it's drs engine

The Hatori 3D pipes actually have a cone inside and are tuned. The F3C pipes are just expansion mufflers with baffles. If a 3D pipe there will be some change in tuning. But try it. Do you already have the pipe ?

You can run a 90 pipe on a 105 engine no problem if that helps.

60% of the time, it works every time!
