Well, today was the day to Maiden the new Whippylash V2!

Jeremy wanted to go today as tomorrow he is busy, and while it was still windy but much better than yesterday (gusting to 22 vs 36 yesterday), we decided to make the day out of it.

For the record, I just built the machine and eyeballed everything. Its almost quicker for me to just do that and make the necessary adjustment as needed on the field. I set the needles on the carb where I thought they should be, as well as the throttle servo arm and travel.

Here is the video of the initial moment of when I started the engine for the first time and lifted her off the ground under her own power:

Watch at YouTube

After the first 8 minutes you see here, we ended up richening the low needle just a hair from my initial settings and the idle speed became perfect without having to adjust any carb links.

The tracking was off by 1 turn on one blade, and I had too much pitch overall on the positive side. So I ended up adjusting both links 1 turn also to bias pitch more towards the negative side and that was all the adjustments I did.

Spent 2 tanks flying easy around and doing some autos, waiting for it to cool a bit and going again. The winds were howling as you can hear on the video so we parked our trucks nose into the wind so our hands would be shielded from the wind inside the heated radio glove. It really was a full fledged winter day, Jeremy and I were dressed in several layers top and bottom, and the temps ended up in the mid to high 30's.

Jeremy actually got to fly it around the beginning of the first tank for about 3 minutes, and he commented about how good it was hands off not drifting. I said today is not the best day to judge that perfectly, but yes it seems to be good to me also.

Here are the next 7 minutes of that flight:

Watch at YouTube

After this I got one more tank through it and towards the end of flight #4 I went into idle up 1 and did some stationary flips and rolls, plus some tic tocs all without using too much power. The heli is very fast, faster than any of the others we both have, however I have to say the blades on it now are light, they are the Radix 710 stick bangers, so designed for 3D not stability, and I intend to use the 716 rails on it, I just don't have a spare pair of those yet. With the current blades the 3D performance should be ballistic, and I'm almost confident it will climb like a raped ape as they are small and light on a 300 motor not even 270. The autos are not as good with those blades, you can see the difference between those and rails, and I prefer the stability of the rails as well, these blades are more touchy.

One interesting point between the Whiplash V1 and V2 is that this machine is much quieter in the gears. I recorded a video of Jeremy's V1 to show this, here it is:

Below are some pictures that Jeremy and I took, enjoy!

I did get to put 1 flight on Whiplash V1 towards the end of the day, and Jeremy took the last flight with his Whiplash V1 as the lights look perfect after 4pm.

WAIT...one last comment forgot to mention...remember the voltmagic light was 2 down from full at 6.5v out of tower hobbies charge level? Well after a couple of tanks it was at 6.6v 1 down from the top and by the end of the day it was all the way up 6.7v. That was cool, loved it!

I attached the last picture of the mount that made this easy to install and Many Thanks to Josef and Judith for making this whole project possible, much appreciated!!

What brands do you think will be around except Goblin in the future? That is the near future I would think. What is safer?

Hi Jack

I don't have any exact dates yet from Josef, he's working on making the parts for the kits from his suppliers.

That's cool about Abigale, looking forward to seeing her again sometime at a field near you -- I'm sure she's going to run out when I land and shut off the engine!!

according to the report, sounds like the big wigs (CEO) over at hobbico decided that their executive paychecks came first and the employee benefits package they agreed to came dead last. that serious garbage if they refuse to pay out the company stock values they owe to retirees and those layed off.

if they cant keep their obligations to their own employees due to "market down turn"... I dont see a market upturn any time soon. AFAIC, this report is a fair warning to all those that wish to buy anything from them that you could be left high and dry in the very near future.

just another obvious fact concerning the decline in the hobby in general

dont think so... maybe just a distributor for them...

the following brand names are exclusive to hobbico...
Proprietary brands include: Axial, ARRMA, Dromida, Team Durango, dBoots, Revell, Monogram, Top Flite, Great Planes, AquaCraft Models, FlightPower, Heli-Max, SuperTigre, O'Donnell Fuel, Duratrax, RealFlight, MonoKote, Carl Goldberg Products, ElectriFly, Coverite, Dynaflite, Flyzone, MuchMore Racing, LiFeSource, Tactic, VS Tank, Estes Industries, Proto-X, TrakPower and others.
sorry for hi-jacking the thread....

The Hobbico news was discussed on FlyingGiants. In typical sensationalist fashion some folks assumed that Futaba is going out of business. not so.

http://www.flyinggiants.com/forums/...ghlight=hobbico

The exact details of whats going on is not clear. What has been stated is that they are deferring FY2016 stock ownership plan payments. Hobbico is a private company so this plan doesn't likely work like your typical IRS regulated ESPP/RSU/Stock Option plans that you see at big corporations. There are no official press releases or SEC filings about this action like we would see with a public companies.

So details are thin... This article has some more info:
http://www.news-gazette.com/news/lo...ex-workers.html

Hobbico is the top level holding company of the entire Tower/GP empire. It was formed when Tower and Great Planes merged in the 80s.

Hobbico is the top level corporation and they use it as a brand name for some inhouse products. I believe its also the brand under which they wholesale to other large national retailers.

Great Planes Model Distributors is the channel that distributes to independent local hobby shops.

Tower Hobbies is their internet retail outlet.

Then they have a number of wholly owned and produced brands that produce airplane kits, building accessories, car and boat kits, plastic models, rockets, etc - Great Planes, Top Flite, Axial, Duratrax, Aquacraft, Revell , Estes, etc.

They own Knife Edge - the folks who make Realfight.

They are the prime US importer/distributor for a number of brands - OS and DLE engines, Futaba radios, Flight Power batteries, etc.

Its safe to say they are facing some challenges but given how large they are (as big as if not bigger than Horizon) I doubt they are going out of business anytime soon. If I where them I would probably change the discounting structure on Tower and spin off some less profitable brands.

jharkin, I know one thing, Hobby People is going out, they sold out all their Magnum engine and many places (like Hobbico) don't have them and if you go to Hobby People's site you will see most of every thing else is out of stock

Hobby people is a much smaller company than Hobbico - I would not infer that becasue they went out of business Hobbico will also. Now I could be wrong, and things inside HObbico might be worse than we think - but they are so big I would expect to see brands start spinning off or shutting down first before the whole ship goes.

Magnum went away a while ago. They where either owned or distributed by Global Hobby who is also gone. I owned a Magnum 4 stroke once 15 years ago and was not that impressed honestly.

More to the point - any company who only makes glow engines is going to go away since glow is dying out. Cox, Irvine, Super Tiger, Thunder Tiger (engines), Royal, ASP, etc are all gone. K&B and Webra both went away but got bought as MECOA brands. Fox stopped making model engines and switched to being a machine shop for hire. That's why Saito has been so aggressively expanding their gasoline line and O.S. has introduced gasoline and starting making electric motors.... They both read the writing on the wall.
