Has anyone swapped the GY240 for a GY401 for the heck of it in the hornet II? I understand the GY240 has worked very well, just a thought since all other my applications will be digital?

I never had a 240 in the hornet II. I used a 401 from the very beginning and it works very well. BTW the delay setting is a valuable asset of the 401 b/c the little servos aren't near as good as the 9253. the limit setting also helps out alot for setup

Before anyone asks, I'm using a JR 700 reciever (so I actually have a channel to spare ) which is exceptionally light even with the case.

The 401 has a higher frame rate. Not too noticable on a Hornet, making either choice a good one. I went with a 240 so I could use the 5 channel Berg.

Also, the Hitec Electron seems to be getting good reviews, and it's six channel.

Actually, I would bet you have the head speed too low rather than too high. At lower speeds, the Speed-300 produces less torque and becomes highly inefficient, drawing large currents. At higher currents your NiMH will also become hotter, lowering the output voltage and overall capacity. It's an avalance (sp?) effect of sort. Maybe your charger didn't fully charge them either. I remember I used to get 5+ minutes with my CP Hornet I with 600mAh NiMH/stock motor. I since switched to BL/LiPo but I can tell you that 3 minutes mean that you screwed up something.

My throttle at hover pitch is 70%. What are other people using with the standard ESC and brushed motor.

Update

I upped the hover point to 80% throttle and I could hover for about 5 1/2 minutes. Still pretty lame. The power definitely isn't there - climbout is terrible. I would guess I'm running somewhere around 8 degrees at the top end. I put a 240 on instead of the 401, and put my berg 5 channel on. Heli weights 325g with battery and no canopy.

Tail is holding well, overall a happy camper right now. I think the swash could use some tightning up -- seems pretty sloppy on the shaft.

They're on order. I have a razor v2 and controller also.

Now, if only my wife hadn't thrown out the canopy

You can order new canopies from Great Hobbies for about $20. Look at the JMD models canopies. I've got the X-Cell one on my Hornet II and think it looks much better than the stock canopy.

Last night I tried a GY-240 that a friend lent me and it was rock solid. I did not change anything and the first hover with the GY-240 was rock solid. I guess that was the problem!

Seems to be a trend here, is every one using a HS-50 for t/r control?

Yes the HS50 is the fastest and lightest servo. Cirrus 4.4 gram comes a close second with a lot more torque and no slop like the 50.

Crasher

According to Hitec's web site, the HS50 weights in at 6.1 grams, so it is not the lightest.

The waypoint servos I'm using are 6 grams

Another update. I put a razor v2 with phoenix 10 amp ESC in today with a 12 tooth pinion. I now get 8.5 minutes hovering around with a 600 mha nimh battery. Looking forward to getting my lipoly's. Weight now 320 grams, no canopy.
