Began experimenting with 2s battery . Set TC at 98 to start and got helicopter to hover. Will continue adjusting TC and making adjustments as needed.

Hmm... Interesting idea.

What size pack are you using? I suppose you would have to go up to a 3,300mAh battery to achieve similar flight times.

What motor or motor KV are you using? What kind of flight times are you getting? Have you altered gearing?

Most experiments I've seen are going the other way. Folks seem to be moving away from 3S batteries towards 4, 5 or 6S. A 2S is an interesting proposition.

To many questions right?

Let us know how it goes.

Hello Bill :

Thanks for asking. Not too many questions , i enjoy experimenting and perhaps others might be interested also.

The LiPo is 2600 mah , but will look at greater capacity as things develop. Motor is 3400kv. I just got her to hover briefly so actual length of flight time forthcoming. The gear is 150t that came with kit. I did change pinion to 12t.

So, I'll have fun with this and continue to keep data on it for my records.

Did 3 - 1 minute hovers today . Full pack read 8.36 at beginning and ended with lipo reading of 7.92. Head speed reading using helitach at beginning was 2117 and 2058 at end. No tail wagging or bobbing.

Interesting . I never thought of doing that to my 450. Don't know why ,it just never occurred to me. Not to hijack your thread but I went a different route for a lower head speed. Not low head speed. I found the smallest pinion I could find ,I think a 9t it was so long ago. I extended the battery tray for correct CG and ran a 1350 mah 3 cell which is half the weight of a 2200 3 cell. I adjusted the pitch and somewhat the cyclic to match the performance of the 2200. All adjustments were adjusted less because there was less weight with the 1350 mah 3 cell. It flew better as it was more efficient with less weight. Interesting too was the fact the flight times were identical between the two.
I may have to try what you are doing also . Sounds great!!!

Setup is everything, All my heli's can fly far better than I can pilot them

The 2s route was suggested to me buy another forum member so I pass it on here. Glad you posted as I'm curious about the different ways to go about lowering head speed so thank you for your information.

my experience

Higher capacity batteries have diminishing return for flight time.
Less weight makes it more efficient.
The less it spins the less it takes to make it spin.
try using wood blades- so you can modify the profile
High gear ratios help make torque to supplement motor torque required.

on a 2S 450 my best was 8-10 min of putzing around

8-10 minutes is encouraging. Thanks for the wooden blade suggestion.

try using a 2800-2900 kv motor 11:1 gear ratio and shoot for around 2000 HS
you will need soft dampers for the head

a 2S1800 -2200 30C or better

and normal blades will get you 8 + mins

just remember the performance is ok for putzing around but forget about 3D
maybe 3D orientation

The lower the C rating for the same mah pack, the weight is usually lower.
On my 6 cell 700 Align I use 30C 6000 pack which is still overkill.
I get 10 minutes minimum safe flight times.

Setup is everything, All my heli's can fly far better than I can pilot them

Thank you for suggestion on motor kv , dampers and lipo . I look forward to seeing how she performs in non- 3D . I appreciate your input.

Since 3D seems to mean alot of different things to many different people what do you consider non 3D? Just hovering around ,,or a few loops or stall turns>? That would be important so we all know with your setup.
Non 3D is great but it seems these days it represents a wide degree of interpretation,,,like everything else.

My plan is to take off to hover then forward flight with turns to left and right .

Currently at TC 0, 65,65,65,65. Flew two 1min 30 sec flights hover and ff. Full pack reading 8.36v ended at 8.00v. Motor slightly warm. HS unknown. Could not get reading from helitach. No tail wagging or bobbing.

You may find some learning it the above link. Of course a calculator will not substitute for for real world flying but you might be able to avoid going down a rabbit hole.
