I would think $20.000.00 or more easily
probably $30.000

I have seen scale heli's that cost $25.000.00
and there were not near that big !!

A 1/2 scale fighter jet is basically a full-size airplane. Full-size construction techniques must be adhered to, or else. His money, whatevs.

E820, Raptor G4N, X50F/E, E620, Forza 450, and some planks.

I don't know where the cost estimates are coming from.
That was a balsa and plywood structure.

I do not think it was a kit.
I would bet this was completely hand built from balsa and spruce with a few molded parts.

It was a nice model and a shame that it wasn't built to withstand the loads. The crash was caused when the vertical stab blew off when he went into knife-edge flight.

But you can see in the video as turns into a cloud of pieces that there was no FG or CF load bearing structures - even the wing's main spar didn't keep the wings from disintegrating.

The center section stayed intact and that was the engine / engine mount structure.
Based on the sluggish performance, I'd guess it was (at best) a basic high thrust turbine.

And, given the lack of explosion / fireball / exhaust trail, I would also guess it was electric.

wait, wait, wait wait, you mean I can build one of those out of wood, glue, and a big fan, and it's 1/2 size, I got an old 800cc snowmobile engine, and 1/2 scale is big enough for people to fly in, and it would be experimental if it only holds 5 gallons of fuel/ no registration needed

LOL

no, it is definitely a turbine. Not every turbine crash will cause smoke or fire. When it ripped apart, when the fuel system disconnects, it just shuts down. You can clearly hear the turbine spool down as the plane disintegrates.

As for performance, it was very scale like and i would not call that marginal by far for a jet of this type. Its just a shame it was poorly (inadequately) constructed.

thats for sure... it flew as if it was made from foam... way way too light weight construction wise...

feel sorry for the guy... when you go up in scale, hobby store balsa and foam board doesnt cut it anymore... you need to start using CF and aluminum structures with bolts/rivets/welds... not CA glue and tissue paper coating (i know its not tissue, but it sure didnt behave like monocoat )

showing a preference will only get you into trouble, 90% of everything is crap...

Why yes. Yes you can.

You can use 1" EPS foam to create huge, lightweight structures.
And, you don't need an 800cc motor to fly it.
Light weight means low wing loading.

I still think this was powered by a pair of 90mm EDF

However, I think the smallest scale I've ever seen for human flight is 2/3 scale:

But, 800cc will not cut it.
You are going to need 1,352cc.

sad
this was at Jetpower In Germany, very unusual for something like to this happen as the pilots must test fly all the models the day before the show..

I could see the guy/spotter was totally gutted, as someone said tail blow out.

I bet that went down with a thud..

Sad to see

Matt
