Sounds like you already have it sorted out.

Gold was under 400$ an ounce in 2000. The price per ounce steadily increased untill it
peaked around 1900$ in 2012. The price has mostly been heading down ever since. I can't see the future, but i would guess the value of gold continues down for a while.

They have two buckets. One with gold, another with money. When gold is increasing in value they want to be filling the gold bucket so they can resell it a few days weeks or years later for profit. When the value of gold is heading down they want to empty the bucket of gold as fast as possible because they are or will be getting their asses kicked to hang onto it.

I have not seen the comercials because i don't watch TV anymore. I hear they are very annoying.

Here is a chart of gold price vs the buying power of a US dollar. Both are sitting relatively high right now, but the gold is on a much larger scale, and far above historical norm. looks like a big bubble to me, 500% over norm. Of the two, i like cash.

Similar situation for stocks. Record high stock prices, but corporate profits are shrinking. The ecconomy is so fragile that a fed bank move of 1/4% has everyone freaked out... again i dont see the future, and it is much more complicated than i know, but i like cash right now.

First off they charge 2 to 3 times of what it's worth. They will buy it back for around 1/2 of the current value if you need to sell. Notice they won't give you both price and weight in their adds. Went to one of those buy your gold and silver things at a hotel. My wife's dad wanted to sell some rings and stuff he found metal detecting. Women next to us had some gold coins these companies sell. They offered her about 1/2 price of the current gold price. I had checked before we went there. She knew the value also and said so. They told her they had to make a profit. She left not in a good mood. Buyer beware and know what it's worth.

Half? Damn. That is one hell of a spread.

Here is an interesting article on the subject: "Gold is the worst possible investment in history".

I was thinking the other day about this. If the system crashed, the first thing they'd do is shut down the banks to prevent a run on money right??? So to me, I would think that would make actual cash worth MORE in the real world.
I figure that means there are 3 things worth more than anything: cash, storable food.... and ammo. Those are the 3 things I've got lots of in my "hidey hole"...hopefully I'm not TOTALLY wrong....

please keep this in mind... the only value "cash" has is the value the government says it does... the government collapses....the cash is worthless. A run on the banks is done by individuals who for the most part do not understand anything about economics. read what your money says on it... it is a bank note... as in the value it represents is solely based on what they bank says it is...

stick with the top three "F's" valuable items of survival...

food, fuel, firearms...

cash is worthless when SHTF

yeah, fuel too. Unfortunately I've got no way to store it. They say your bug-out place should be less than one tank of fuel away. That really won't get me out of the crap. THOUGH I have a friend who just bought some acreage that IS and it's fairly remote (for Florida) and he wants me to buy an adjoining parcel. I'm designing his "fortress" right now.....

Here is one near me. The whole ground floor is covered with a dirt berm, with a small 2nd story at the top. Probably stays fairly cool in the hot humid Florida weather.

I think about the hereafter. I go somewhere to get something, then wonder what I'm here after ?

thats neat...

I remember seeing a pic somewhere of a home that was built completely into a large hill that was itself covered with thick brush and trees and the power line was buried for a good distance from the supplying utility pole... damn good place to hide out a "situation".

as for me, if SHTF, its all on faith, the skills I have and the little I have stored... I dont have any such place to run to.

But I sure as hell will take out anybody who tries to F with me while it all goes down.

I should start building a car with armor plate and spikes and a blower that turns on and off with a switch like Max had. Maybe brush up on my Thunderdome skills?

Gyro - that's the direction we're going. A small home above ground for normal living with some ballistic protection on the windows... and storage for food, ammo and water and emergency sleeping below. With some hidden escape tunnels. He's a builder, so....
Problem is he's a stranger there and it's a VERY tight knit community, so we're thinking we'll have our trade guys come up on weekends and work on it as to keep it as secretive as possible since it will be more like a weekend getaway type place.
UNTIL the SHTF.....
About a 3-1/2 hour drive from us.

gadzooks.... that took me a second...now Im cleaning Iced tea off my keyboard...

as for GOLD... dont waste your time or money on it.

invest in tangible things you'll need to survive such a catastrophic event such as an economic collapse.

Skills in hard times above all are priceless... and in times of severe need, you set your price for those that need them.
