When setting up my Trex 500, when I get to the part where you set the collective pitch, the positive pitch is almost double the negative, so I have to back the slider down to almost zero the get the same + and - figures. And then when I go to the cyclic pitch, it's showing 4 degrees + where is should be showing zero. I know this points to the mechanical setup, but how do I go about re-adjusting it?

It's a Trex 500 belt drive tail that has a DFC head on it. It was flying fine under 5.3.

During the same step where you leveled the swash, you also center the swash in the throw. You may have skipped that step.

if it ain't broke, break it.

It sounds like to me that the collective stick wasn't centered when you set 0 pitch on the blades. Are you running 6.0 on your Vbar? The mechanical setup needs to have the swash leveled at mid stick on both versions.

On the 5.3 setups, I've done my travel adjustments on the transmitter has never been more than just a couple points to get equal collective throws at high an low stick.

When you get to the trim tab, you level the swash in the center of the travel (all adjustments done mechanically) then build the links to the head and adjust to get zero pitch.
Now when you go to the collective tab, the (+) and (-) pitches should be close.
In the cyclic tab, if the number to get 8 degrees is over 100, you need to move the balls further out on the servo horns. If the number is under 80, you need to move them closer to the center of the servo.
This is to ensure your geometry is correct.

In VBAR when you go to the trim tab, the stick is disabled (verified by moving it up and down) and it sets the servos to zero. You build the links there.

I hear you, and by using trim what you are really doing is setting the servo arms at 90 degrees, right, to take spline differences out. I was just thinking that somehow the collective wasn't centered (or servos) somehow. That would explain large differences in collective travel.

Also on standard radios, make sure the pitch curve is the same for high and low stick.

Ok, when I got to the screen where you level the servos, they were slightly off, so I used the trim function to get the arms exactly 90 degrees. This lowered the swashplate slightly.

The swash was still a little over the halfway point on the mainshaft, so I shortened the connecting links by about 5 turns each. Now the swash is centered and level.

Now when I get to pitch screen, I have 0 pitch at mid stick, and after setting 11 degrees pos and neg, the numbers are within 3 points of each other, now in the 90s.

Now when I go to the cyclic pitch screen, I get .3 degrees of pitch at 0. Click for the 8, and I only have to change the slider a few clicks to get my 8 degrees.

Now all of my settings are much closer to the ideal values, however the real test is tomorrow morning when I try to fly the thing.

Thanks everyone for all the advice!

Mikado recommends the fold blade method for setting zero pitch. Go back to the swash level screen and fold the blades tip to tip. Then adjust the collective setting so that the tips touch. This will ensure equal positive and negative values on the next screen when you set your collective pitch.

if it ain't broke, break it.

That method works, I use a digital pitch gauge, works perfectly as well

got the heli in the air today. seemed pretty stable, just a few tweaks are in order. Slight tail wag. Have to read up on governors, never used one before. The vbar governor was down on headspeed, hovering at 3/4 stick. Changing the governor headspeed value didn't make a difference. Changed to external gov, and found the setting for esc output. Jacked that up to 100 and got decent headspeed. Getting the manual out to do some more reading.

Got to increase the stick tension on the gimbals!!!!!!!

Figured out how to do the custom defined screens. Nice.

I never realized how convenient the "change from the radio instead of pc" could be. You never realize what a hassle pc and usb cables and whatnot are until you use a VControl!!

I really like this radio.

maybe you CAN teach an old dog new tricks???

In depth governor - external and Vbar

Custom user defined screens

Talking switches - haven't seen anything about the voice app yet.

I've seen a lot of people talk about the manual. It's a little brief, but I thought it was pretty easy to follow, as manuals go.....
