So I flew two packs on my Goblin 500 6s4500mah I placed in my third pack it armed and I walked it to the runway. Spun the blades just a little and started to spin up, stopped before 1/2 way and slammed the stick down to slow the head speed, I was not ready to take off. About 5 seconds later I try to spin up to take off and nothing. Stick all the way down then up nothing, all the way up nothing, then all the way down and walk out to the heli. No lights on my Icon controller. I unplugged and re plugged, nothing no spark no lights on the Icon.
Went back to the flight bench and tried the last of my 4 batteries, same. Nothing dead.

So I do not have any other electronics here, no BEC (just the internal one inside the Kontronic. I think I have the Jive 100+ A quick assessment at the field seemed like the internal BEC quit, or I somehow reprogrammed it? with my quick throttle adjustment? Hardly likely I hit the magic sequence. I have not taken the Kontronic out yet, and I do have to re check the connection from the Kontronic to the Icon. Nothing obvious but need to look closer. Wondering if anyone has experienced this? I have flown this setup/heli unchanged for maybe 5 years. Guessing 50 to 60 flight total. There has been no indication of failure and I have not had any incidents with respect to the ground

Suggestions? Any similar issues? If its connected properly and nothing is out of order I suppose I ship it to Kontronic for inspection/repair. I decided when I bought this setup that I would spend the extra 150 plus for THIS controller based on the reliability and performance. Up until last night I have gotten what I paid for.

Kontronic is definitely the top shelf of speed controllers, but failures do happen. Is there any sign of life at all from the ESC when you plug the battery in? Check the bec wire for any bare spots or breaks?

No sign of life at all. No snap when you plug it in, no lights no movement. When you say the BEC wires do you mean the wires that run to the Icon? I will re inspect them tonight closer. At first glance nothing appears worn, chaffed or disconnected. It has led a pretty sheltered life Nothing wild while in flight, mild acrobatics, tic tocs, rolls loops flips that pretty much it. Will have to go thru the connections, check the caps in front of the unit too. Perhaps reprogram it. I dont think I had a program card. Must have used the simple throttle setup thing. Looking for manual now.

yes, the BEC goes to the Icon. If you don't hear the arming tones from the ESC when you plug it in, it sounds like the unit failed. Rare for Kontronic, but it happens.

Its just that its been so long since I set this up and I have not done a thing to it since setup, (as far as the Icon and Kontronic) do you think moving the jumper and trying to reset it would be a likely solution ?

It really sounds like the unit is bad, but I would certainly give it a try before I sent it back to Kontronic.

With everything completely dead and no LED on the esc my concern is that the unit is dead. Normally the full reset is doing by pulling the jumper after the asceding tones a selecting Mode 1 first, but since it is putting out nothing, that becomes more problematic.

Before just sending it to Germany, go through Kontronik USA Service PO Box 5 Oakville Indiana 47367. If needed Greg can send it on to Germany with other repairs probably more economically than you as a stand alone package.

Thanks Dr. Ben. That is my next stop.
Too tied up to move the jumper and try to reset/program last night but my thoughts were if there is no power, it might be dead to reprogramming too. If I did get it to reset, would I trust it as much? Nope. I have been extra careful with component selection setup and flying. This heli is fairly stock but we are into it for well over $1500

Will park the electric and crank up the Nitro for a few weeks. I would rather this get checked out and or replaced before trying it again. I can't help but think what made it quit then, sitting on the runway vs. 30 seconds later when I would have been up? My guess is complete lost of everything = rock falling to earth. May have been a blessing in disguise really!

Always better for a failure to happen on the ground rather that 50ft up!!

As far as the esc itself is concerned, if you can get it to reset successfully, I would trust flying it again. Where I'd go looking after that is any and all solder joints and the motor. Normally if the esc detects a problem it will protect itself by only shutting down the motor, but being that the esc is a computer of sorts, I ain't never saying never.

I went thru the wiring and found nothing out of place or chaffed. Took off blades and plugged in a battery. small spark inside the connection nothing at all from Kontronic or Ikon. I did not try to place the jumper. Would this have made any difference? No indication of any power no noise no lights.

Last thing that happened when I was spinning the blades on the runway
Spinning about 30% throttle bounce throttle up to about 40 then down to min and it just spun down and off at that moment. Dead ever since.

Found the orig box and receipt May 2013 was when I bought it.

Simmer, I think your esc is dead. You should see SOME signs of life when you apply power, regardless of it being in programming mode or not.

Kontronic has good customer service, so I would contact the USA office to see if they will at least give you a break on a new one, if not replacing the dead one. Never hurts to ask.

Since it failed while in use, and there is no visible signs of failure like charring, melting, whatever, they may be more inclined to help you out.

Yup process started. Was thinking about this driving into work today. This one item is the most expensive thing on my helicopter, outside of the helicopter itself.

yep, I hear you. Failures can happen to any type of gear, but I never regret buying the good stuff, I think it pays for itself in the end.

Email back from Greg at kontronic and looks like I may qualify for a discount towards a new one. Warranty is 2 years, mine was 3 years old. Will see what the best fit for my goblin500 is and probably get that. Meantime we will pull out the Trex600 nitro for a bit.
