Gary and LaDon,

I am sure IRCHA would love to have the two of you volunteer during the week to act as flight marshals and offer your input to pilots you feel are flying outside of their abilities. It would be fantastic to have the two of you offer your services to help make the event safer.

Would the two of you like to share the title of Flight Marshal and help to arrange a team of people to work with you to ensure a safer flight line?

The rest of you that would like to contribute to improved flight line safety will be able to work with LaDon and Gary. It would be a great team and you have a year to work together to create a set of recommendations.

Its amaizing how those who don't fly smack talk the most smack. The pilot who had this tail strike shut the heli down that very second. Big name pro pilots spoke on his behalf giving him huge respect and props for the quick reactions he displayed under that amount of pressure. He wasnt flying irresponsibly nor recklessly. Lets dont bash what most here can not do to begin with.

25 feet from the pilot cone to place the Heli, and that in theory the Heli should never come closer than that.
looks like the heli operating near the ground was closer to the pilot line [right before the guy leaned to the left] than the safety line

I'm really trying to avoid commenting on the pilot's role,
I can't even imagine myself in that role before, during, and after.

And going off on the tangent of what any of those pilots do is counter productive. Pilots are going to push the limits. IRCHA and the AMA aren't backing them off (yet) so the extreme speeds, low flying, and such are all part of the plan.

I don't see the Jamboree being completely reworked any time soon (and I don't want it to be) and an extra safety feature (or two) doesn't have to change the nature of the event.

Damn Chas,

Sarcasm is hard to convey over the internet.
But I think I need a towel, because I just showered in it.

R10,

That wasn't sarcasm. I think it would be great if the LaDon and Gary were to contribute their time and energy. They have been around the hobby for longer than many of the new generation of pilots have been alive. Making something better takes more than words and I am sure that LaDon and Gary would both be willing to sacrifice some of their time at the Jamboree to help out.

This goes for everyone on the thread. The jamboree takes volunteers to make things happen. If there are enough of you with experience and the willingness to help, then an entire volunteer group of flight line marshals would add to a safer flight line. I don't think there were enough flight marshals in the past, so if this has increased the willingness of a new group of people to volunteer, then something good has come from this disussion.

Well, see?

It is hard to read.
Lol

I looked into volunteering my second year going, but I couldn't get it worked into my schedule.

Now that I know more about what it entails, and that it's how you get those nifty raffle tickets....

Curious as to what's considered twice mistake high these days for a 700 heli?

1400mm or 2800mm?

since this is a general saturday thought category. I was wondering others thoughts on the low pilot count this year. Was it an off year or is this event losing popularity. I was expecting an attendance drop but not the massive amount it was down from previous years.

Between the overall market downturn, some of the comments last year post event that I had heard, and the drop in attendance this year in some regional events, I was not at all surprised to see the turnout where it fell. Last year more than a few guys had left with the impression that the event had become too commercialized and no longer had atmosphere that it had had in years past. Hopefully next year we won't see another drop.

You used to be able to go to Ircha and get smoking deals from the vendors, now they think 10% off full retail is a smoking good deal
I liked the days when Ron Lund would bring boxes of old inventory and it was two bucks for choice item,
that was good times!!

I think the cost to be a vendor has gotten so high fewer of them are showing up, and if they do they can't afford to offer great sales due to cost to attend.

EDIT: I realize prices for vendors probably hasn't gone up much in the past 10 years, but expecting them to pay 500-to thousands for entry PLUS also expected to provide free prizes has meant in the past few years with the drop in the economy vendor prices should have dropped.

Which is worse, ignorance or apathy? I don't know and I don't care!

Skills, yes.

Flying responsibly?

Pilot impacted the ground during a voluntary maneuver with his craft in an orientation such that it immediately went for the crowd.

I've seen it a few times where the tail hits the ground and strips the tt gears and the heli spins off usually towards the pilot. Maybe ban tt tail drive helis?!

Richard,
I thought it looked like that too.
Does anyone know for sure?

If it were the tail blades getting damaged it would have had some tail authority left wouldn't it?
It appeared that it dropped to zero authority instantly.

pilot error; 3D trick too low & too close
not enough time & space for uncontrolled crash
immediately hitting the TH the heli falls & won't travel

it is very easy to lose All tail control less then a sec,
and Revmix,
just hitting TH may cause heli to drop but it just kills the engine, it does not stop forward momentum.

forward momentum
heli was climbing after ground contact [power must have been cut off when the heli passed the pilot overhead], too close for comfort

Depending on what his next move was supposed to be, it may have not been obvious in that moment that there was a failure.
