Its now history. The scale tent had every table full, lots of spectators at all three rounds of flying as well as those coming to check out the helis. As usual Darrell did a fine job of running things. Sandy had several machines and had one in the air almost every minute of every day. Kirsten from Vario hooked us up Friday evening with some tasty german quisine. I was happy to report that of the many crashes at ircha this year, none of them involved a scale machine
The turnout for pilots this year at ircha was down from previous years but it wasn't showing at the scale tent
Despite the warm temps on Friday and the wind on both Friday and Saturday, the scale contest went smoothly with lots of good flying skills demonstrated. it was nice to see several first timers too and I think they enjoyed the applause they got. see, its not so tough and scary to compete. I wish everyone a safe trip home and see y'all at Dalton.

IRCHA was awesome again for me. Not so much fir Airwolf. Post crash inspection and video coming soon. She is still in one piece and damage doesnt appear to be too bad.

Thanks again to Darrell for an outstanding event!!! Twas good to see everyone again!!

Wow, thanks for all of the great pics Emile! It looks like some top notch helis showed up this year. I got a real kick out of the "sharpie" mustache on the Loach pilot, too cool.

Ircha scale contest had 8 pilots striving to take home one of my Huey stick trophy. After 3 rounds of flying 4th place went to Chris Zolen flying a B model Huey, 3rd went to Dennis Engel flying a Vario AH-64 2nd was Mike Zabovoski flying his EC 145 and 1st was Emile Sheriff flying his Bell 407. Kirsten of Vario had prizes for the top 3 winners, each prize was chosen for that pilot. Dennis won 2 pilots for his next project, Mike won a rotor head to finish his vario kit he won 2 years ago, Emile won a mechanics set to build a proper size Heli (LOL) The new kid on the block Chris Zolen woke up the old dogs by winning a flight round and doing a Auto.
The rest of the stories will be told at Dalton see you there.

Congratulations to all the winners! Sounds like it was a great competition and some awesome prizes that were custom made for the winners.

Emile, thanks for posting all the photos, it looks like there were a lot of new machines out there that are really outstanding.

Darrell, Even though I haven't been to the NATS or IRCHA yet I really appreciate all you do for this hobby. Please keep it up and I promise that will show my support by showing up and participating at your events in the future!

Stan, I heard folks ask for you and Gayl the most over the weekend, both you guys are always a favorite among us and many others I didn't know. Hope to see you both at Dalton.
It was a big accomplishment for me taking home the gold this year at ircha, believe me, everyone flew very well, I knew the judges had their work cut out for them after watching the first round. It was soo nice to see several new guys pop up out of the blue who flew quite well and one did several autos with his uh-1.
Congratulations to Mike and Dennis on their 2nd and 3rd place wins. It was difficult to tell how it would turn out because everyone, everyone flew very well.
A big thank you to Marc, Evan and Mike for calling for me, the judges, Mark, Don and Sergio for dealing with the heat and the few of us who dragged butt getting ready to fly and to Darrell who never gives less than a 100% in running an event and making sure everyone is happy.
Also a big thank you to Kirsten of Vario for the wonderful prizes to the three of us for our wins!

Im going to need a longer mantelpiece now

The only thing I seen was the very nice Apache drop his missles in a 'heavy' landing.......but that is what you are suppose to do w. them, right, release them

Some very nice flying over there!

Did I understand that the guy w. the ponytail, EC145/Hughes 500, is Grimracer, the big boat guy? If so, I had a very nice chat w. his buddy,
did not get his name, he was also coming from a boat race in Ill Sat.
afternoon.

My 10 cent wrap up.
First and foremost, thank you to Darrell for heading all this and to the judges for their time and dedication to the event.

Congrats to the competitors for their willingness to win, lose or draw.. the bottom line is you have to BE THERE to have a chance.

Congrats to Bernard Shaw (#1 NATS) and to Emile Sheriff (#1 IRCHA). Both well deserved.

I would like to have my 10 cent moment here. I met a number of new buddys and man that’s the best.. we had a gathering of buddys and a heli contest broke out! At the same time, I had two buddy’s blow me off… not sure what happen. one I helped intensely a few years ago. I guess memories fade. Maybe its mine……… Time for me to let it go..

I was very nice to get to know Both Steve Smith and Evan Sayres better. Both of these guys are top notch in my book and a large part of what the hobby looks like in the future. I have a blast hanging out with these guys and talking helis, history and family.

I am one that feels that a large turnout does not make a contest great but the attitude and willingness to compete and take a few lumps more important. Loosing is a fantastic motivator! (for me at least!) Having said that.. now is a good time to start to plan for next year. As far as I can see there are really only 3 scale helicopter contests in the US each year. (one in Florida and two in Muncie). Start planning and practicing now.. and you will get a full season of scale fun regardless of what contest you attend.

See ya after the hover set!

Congrats to all the winners and to those that participated in both events, IRCHA and the NATS. A big round of applause to Darrell, AMA, and IRCHA for the week of good competition, friendship, and to that higher power for the fantastic weather (heat? what heat?). I was happy to have been able to participate this year, helping Darrell with the judging, so next year you'll know who you need to bribe, lol. The scale tent was hopping busy this time out as more and more people came over to watch the rounds of flying take place. I know how much a round of applause is welcomed after a good flight has been put in. I hope to participate for many years to come either in front of the crowds or behind the scenes. Take care.

Don

PS: Thanks for those pictures, Emile. Great as always.
