I had a Hiayan 6S 3300 lipo that was getting very puffy. It still had great power output. I put it in the charger and charged it fully. Then hooked a standard car charger up to it for 15 minutes or so. No luck. So I cut the wires and attempted to anchor them together to create a little fire show. Nothing. It sparked then couldn't get anything out of them again.
So I took an old screw driver and nailed it through one side. Started to smoke but it only smoked a small amount in all cells.

I figured a lipo fire was fairly easy. Apparently I can't even force it to catch fire lol.

Hmmm... I'm missing something. A 6S fully charged is 25.2 volts. A 12 volt car charger will either dis-charge the battery, be damaged itself, or do nothing.

I question your technique!

Next time put the 6S on a hobby charger without the balance lead and tell your charger it is a 10S pack. Set it to a 2 or 3C charge. You have to over charge the battery. You have to take the cells to over 4.2 volts. This is almost guaranteed to start a fire.

I can't say I've actually done the above but I, personally, would stand by with a fire extinguisher... If you burn your house down it's not my fault!

You could also tell your charger you are charging a NiMh or NiCa battery and set it to a 5 amp charge. Your charger will begin charging in a peak charge mode. Of course LiPos never peak and the charge will continue until the pack bursts and releases all those Watt-Hours.

I suspect this is the source of most current LiPo fires.

I have two 6S 5k lipos that are on their way out, charging at over 1C and they get warm now and the puffing is cracking the shrink wrap. I am trying to figure out how to get the new to me smart cellpro 6 to overcharge them to real world test out my lipo bunker. I haven't tried to get it to charge a nimh/nicd yet, wonder if it will let me. Kinda excited to do it on purpose lol

For years at our club, LiPoly packs that have seen their better days are set up and shot with a 22. Normally the packs are charged up some just before execution. The overwhelming majority result is copious amounts of smoke. Once in a while there is a little flame from the shrink wrap or circuit board material catching on fire. In a small percentage, nothing happens. Only once in all the years we have been doing this has there been a fireball type explosion. That was impressive, but has never been duplicated.

The older I get, the fewer things seem worth waiting in line for.

I've also tried to get some kind of explosion or fire from my old packs with mixed results. I did notice one scary trait. Days after I did my best to destroy them, they would spontaneously burst into flames. Sometimes 3 or 4 days later and they won't go out for a long time. Don't trust them, Soak them in salt water for DAYS, then dispose. or leave them in the fire pit and watch...

Wjvail, I think your right. I used the car charger thinking it might slowly pump some juice into them. It worked for sure with 3s but yeah 6s it probably would never work. I think it discharged them some before they smoked.

LOL they only happen when you don't want them.

That said, I've never had one. I poked a puffed one with a nail but all I got was venting smoke. It did look pretty hot though.

of course, this is what happens when one falls out of your flight bag walking to the car. If I recall correctly, it hit right on the corner of a cell and it cracked open.

This was also a good pack. Not a depleted/dead one I intended to sacrifice.

Also, I think it's less about breaching the hull, and more about the heat. In my example only cell 1 was broken. Heat kicked off each of the other cells.

Watch at YouTube

But, also sometimes it's just dumb luck.

if it ain't broke, break it.

I think the better condition of the lipo, the better show they put on!

mine must have been pretty good because the flames shot out pretty fast and high.
