I bought an old school used vario EC135 from another member on RR. This will be my new beater bomber heli, so it should be fun to fly. It had Xtreme mechs and nitro power. Joe at ECSH has a nice E-Power conversion kit in stock, but I chose to shorten the mechs to clear up some cabin space (plus I like making stuff). I moved the motor location back 5 inches, so I'll probably need additional nose ballast. I'll put a bunch of stuff under the cabin floor.

So I ended up designing and machining my own e-power conversion. This conversion ended up being quite a bit of math, in order to put the motor exactly where I needed it (horizontally and vertically). It was a bit of a head scratcher, but a few 4 finger cocktails later we have a winner... I also had to machine a custom 8mm motor shaft to hang the clutch on the Xera. They don't make an 8mm shaft.

I'm using 12S lipo, the motor is a 400KV Xera, clutch is the stock Xtreme 22 tooth for 8mm shaft and I used an XL200-037 belt. This combo is good for 1375 RPM head speed, which I needed to keep the fenny tail under control.

Looking Barry, that is some top notch machine work.
I think that if you took that "Barbie" and made her pregnant that would add some ballast up front LOL.
Can't wait to hear about how it flies.

Nice conversion. I am starting to appreciate the Xtreme mechanics lately...

I think that you can fir a pair of 6S batteries in the nose so you will not have to put a lot of dead weight in this helicopter....

Thanks guys I'm waiting on a new Demon unit and an esc at the moment. I also have to swap out the old school servos that came with it. I have a set of BLS451's that I plan to use. Putting a 6V high torque servo on the tail too, as that seems to be the weak link in this heli.

Ron: You crack me up bud. Quit getting all excited, I told you the Barbie doll didn't come with the heli...

GH: Yeah, I figure that the 2 6S 5300's and RX lipo will do a good job of balancing her out.

Mano: Yeah, I did a short stint on night shift this week. So I stayed late and hit the machine shop. No one bothers me after hours, as the place is dead... The cocktails and math were done at home. No co-workers were harmed during the production of these parts... But you would have laughed when you saw the look on my face when it all lined up and fit on the first try...LOL

Are those Gens Ace you use with 5300 mah?
I am playing with the setup and placement in Bell but the 5300's are the best as far as my space is concerned....
Tryed to put in 4x 4000 mah batteries (two in parallel and then lined up in series of 8000mah 12S sticks...
Just have to find a few more mm of space....

Hi Klem, yes they are Gens Ace. I really like these lipos, I'm flying the same lipos for over 3 years and they still perform great. It's a good bang for your buck. 8000mah would be great, lots of flight time!

Yes so far I am happy with the GensAce batteries. The 5300 mah serve me well... as do the 4000 mah that I have...

well... First I have to find some time (this year has been killing my modeling time not to mention the flight time...) and to make space and then hopefully I can fit the 8000 Mah batteries...

Thanks Stan! Yeah, it's nice being home, 5 months of work travel will wear you out...

So, here's the latest on this build. I tore the mechs down and found some disturbing issues. To be honest, I'm surprised this was ever in the air. The builder (not the previous owner) used a benzin main shaft and the snap ring groove was not in the correct location for retaining the gear, so there was only .025" of the stub shaft engaged in the lower bearing So, I machined a new snap ring groove in the correct location on the Benzin shaft, problem fixed. I also put a new hole in the shaft for the Century diamond 4 blade head that I plan to use. Another major issue is the delrin tail drive gear had split from top to bottom. So I need to replace that too. How these 2 parts didn't fail during flight I don't know... On top of that, the entire heli was built with locktite red, so I've had to heat every set screw with a soldering iron to get them out. This is why I typically don't buy stuff that's already built.

Thanks to my bud Emile(CopterDr), I got the head built and fit up this evening. I needed a feathering spindle for the head and he sent me one, free of charge. This hobby has the best folks on the planet!

Now I'm just waiting for the servos to show up, I seem to have misplaced my set of BLS451's. I should have the servos and head set up by mid week.

You guys are too cool, thanks for the kind words. But I have been the recipient of help on many occasions, so I like to pay it forward when I can. We are a big family, that's for sure

Here's the latest progress: I swapped out the tail servo for a BLS451. I moved it 1 inch forward for better weight distribution and swapped out the flat head slotted screws for 2.5mm allens. It makes it much easier to get the servo out if needed. The mechs are mocked up, back in the fuse. I need to make a couple of adjustments, then I'll take them out and install the side frames and servos. I hope to have her in the air soon. Stay tuned...
