OK guys, no BS here, these 2 stories are about my 2 friends, both I have known since the 70s,, and both know each other but not that well at all..

friend 1),, buys a $50 Quad off the Net from the "Wall of Mart", this Quad will be his very first flying toy,, he figured it must be a good Quad because the price came all the way down to $50 from $150, well before he receives it he also orders a 30" long Fixed Pitch heli, he tells me he want's to chase the Rabbets in his back yard for fun,, he gets the Quad, LOL it wont charge off the charger that came with it, then he gets the Fixed Pitch heli, it too wont charge, he sends back the Qaud, but as for the heli WallMart is giving him trouble,,, so I try to talk to him about what he should do for buying a Quad, as I talk to him he keeps interrupting me, I tell him he's not listening to me and he tells me> (quote)> "I know, I want to do it my way",, LOL.. well finely after a few days I get him to go to a trustful RC shop and he get's a $130 Quad ordered, it has a camera LOL..

friend 2),,
this friend was my best friend in my teens and threw my 20s, we both got married and don't see much of each other, I have not seen him in a year,, yesterday LOL, he shows up at my door, LOL tells me he bought a drone, his too is his first flying toy, and it's big and powerful, 2 1/2ft OD, 7 Props LOL, about 3 Grand, wants me to fix it because he crashed it on it's first flight LOL,, my wife (laughing) asked him "if he learned anything about the crash",,, he smiles and answered (quote> ) "no, well only not to fly it indoors" ,, (wow I laughed), he tied to fly that big 7 Prop Quad inside his house,, he said (quote> ) "I just touch the stick and it jumped up to the light and sh!t in the house went everywhere when the props hit, and the right stick is so sensitive to the touch" at that I laugh more and I asked him if he knew what "Expo" is, he tells me no, I laugh again and my wife laughs too,, in the end I told him IF I fix it and it crashes his first thought would be "Jim fixed it",, so I told him I would not fix it, I then told him if he fixed it he would learn something,, he goes on telling how tiny the screws are..

then what did I do when he left my house, LOL LOL well I called friend 1 and told him about friend 2..

note that> while yes the 2 stories are funny for what they are, but what's not funny is I tried to tell both of them to register with the FAA and join the AMA and why it's so important to do so, but they both told me pretty much the same thing, they just want to have fun in their back yards

like the two organizations are going to make them instant successful flyers, head butt.

recommend they get a Blade Inductrix (?) and really master that first while becoming familiar with the tx functions, they can fly indoors, crash more than once and continue to fly afterward if flying over carpet and or grass outdoors. The outdoor experience will teach them about wind. Don't tell them to go elsewhere for repairs, guide them through their own repair as they are going to have to repair the craft on their own if they want to play on and know what to order in the future.

And forget the fp helis, make sure they get a good enough tx to be able to bind a cp heli, the 450 being the a-typical size and remember to make sure they put training gear on, only to attempt first flights after they know the tx is set up for the heli properly, then they can catch up to you one day.

My guess is their wives will learn to fly quicker then they will as they have nothing to prove among male egos and posturing, and imprinted boyhood idiosyncrasies,

live on.

You need to impress on them is that there is no shortcut to learning to fly a heli or a quad.....and point them in the same path of learning as everyone else has over the years.....
Start them out with something like this.....

It is rare that anyone stops to talk when I fly (Terot 130 and a ZMR-250) (in a lightly wooded area). but a couple of times they have stopped and asked the usual questions . I had a couple of 12-13 year old's stop and ask if they could give it a try. I said sure and I puled out my Hubsan X4 and launch it off my hand and show them how easy it is to fly and then come back and land it in my hand. They tried for about 2 min and then just got on there bikes and rode away.
