Had a few hours to spare today so....got the CNC fired up and made pinions out of brass!
The two on top are century...

the four on the bottom...12T, 13T, 14T and 15T Brass Pinions

mills and lathes cut brass like butter
no kidding...its been at least 10 years since I cut anything from brass, normally work with steel or aluminum, even plastic...I was surprised by how fast I could run them compared to alloy steel...The finish was superb, and no lubricant or coolant needed.

tricky part was not using positive rake cutters on the lathe...otherwise it bites into the brass and causes finish problems.

once school work dies down I plan on cutting the two main gears from black delrin... but it will have a new version of the torque dampening hub design (and it works too )

Also hope to start writing CNC code for the bevel gears...I want to try straight ones first then go with helical bevel gears for the tail...I figure either brass or a combo of brass and delrin...

yes...it also wears in better against the delrin main gear and gets a much smoother finish compared to machined steel....this is why you see it used as gears in small machines quite often as the pinion gear and other parts (like in our servos and in clocks where friction is a big concern)

Manufacturers dont like to use brass cause its costs more

the reason I wanted to make my own was two fold...

1) the century pinions were very rough cut...some were so bad that they eat up the main gear and leave white plastic "dirt" all around the heli fan shroud

2) Ive run into pinions that were machined off center so much it could be seen when mounted between centers...this would cause a multiple high spots when trying to set the gear mesh.

plus I hope to sell some...

I make the ones specific to the radikal g20/30. I do not have any plans for "other" designs at the moment.

So if its a 10T, 11T, 12T, 13T, 14T or 15T for a Radikal, then I got you covered.

Looks great!

If they wear too quick, try using bronze. It is more durable and why it is used for plain bearings. It won't cut as easy, go back to dead sharp HSS tooling.

Crown gear

If he can't make that maybe you can use the Miniature Aircraft one:

https://www.miniatureaircraftusa.co...ter_name=0866-5

It is also 70 teeth, you might be able to match up the holes in it or just drill new ones to fit your hub, not sure but its an idea.

yes pitch (or modulus) have to be the same, for helical gears the helix angle has to match too ontop of the pressure angle of the gear.

any mismatch with any, even a tiny bit causes serious issues... I tried once to mate a 26 pitch gear with another that was 1.0 mod (25.4 pitch) and it was close, but the wear and vibration was really bad.
try using bronze
yeah those would be the best especially if I used oil impregnated bronze bearing alloys... but cost twice as much too
