It uses Infra-red instead of any RF to do control. I would suspect its reliability in sunlight. I think "You get what you pay for" really would apply in this case. The first mishap would leave you out in cold, because I doubt parts would be available anywhere.

A " mall heli" I've seen a few of them, one or two crashes takes the tail gears out or breaks the flybar balls off the carrier. No parts = shelf queen or trash.

Damn that ground is hard! When's the right time to get out of this money sucking hobby?

Forget the heli and go straight to quads.

There... I said it, and it is the truth. Money better spent.

FWIW - Not IR controlled, 2.4GHz Radio is used. Crashes won't destroy tail gears because it has none.

Would I buy it? Probably not. I have been given a couple of smaller versions. The horizontally oriented tail rotor for fore/aft control is awkward. As a coaxial heli, it is relatively easy to control, but the controls do not map to those of a standard RC heli.

Would it work for your friend? Probably. Is it a good first step? Not if your friend intends to eventually move up to a "real" RC heli (those awkward controls don't work the same as standard RC helis, he would have to re-learn the right controls). If he just wants an inexpensive toy with a low resolution camera and doesn't plan to ever fly a "real" RC heli, it would probably fill the bill.

Parts can probably be sourced from the manufacturer, but would guess it might take awhile. The battery is likely fixed in place, making it fly-charge-wait kind of operation.
