Gun laws/Crime rate

I don't think gun laws directly impact the crime rate. I blame America's high crime rate on poor parenting (or no parenting). Kids are not taught right from wrong. Too many parent abandon their kids, or try to be their kids best friend, not their parent. When I grew up, I was one of the few kids with my mom and dad still married. I think America is in a turn around. We have seen the errors of our ways. The conservative movment is growing by leaps and bounds.

I make huge sacrafices so that my wife can stay home and raise the kids. This is evident in my poor mans heli setup, I make good dough but it is hard with only one income.

Stealing would be safer where no one has guns, but there are many idiot thieves here in America.

The crime/murder rate in New York is not a good representation of America. New York is a class all its own.

I am still curious who Kino thought was sounding like an a hole? Please back up your cyber punch.

Peace to all

I have a friend that drives a bus in Vancouver BC. I was talking to him just the other day and guns came up.We used to go to the same ranges and meets. He said the crime rate has went off the scale there since the gun ban has gone into effect .. I am one that always figured a gun could save you and it is true .. it happened to me. I never even had to take it out to show it ..Just the butt of the pistol was sticking out of my coat .. the creeps took of on a run as fast as they could .. I was baffled when it happened too and the guy that was with me said the gun butt was sticking out .I hadnt even thought of the gun in my coat yet.. A GUN CAN AND WILL SAVE YOUR BUTT OR SOMEONE ELSES and that someone else could be your wife or kid or neighbor ...Its the criminal that I dont trust.
.Another time my wife caught a burglar in the garage and stopped him cold and held him till the cops came with a BB gun.. The moron couldnt tell the difference .. I know the cops got there real quick when she mentioned she had a gun and would use it on him if they didnt get there fast..I think she still has the article that was in the paper about it..

I hate a thief.

Dude that stinks.. For some reason I don't think a pro would steal a Heli. They cost a lot, and there isn't really a place they could sell it. Stupid kids on the other had would. Then they would try and pawn it off, or god forbid take it down to the local school and try to fly it. With any luck your insurence will cover it, and better yet maybe it will turn up in a pawn shop, and they can catch the guy.
Ok now the hot topic.. GUNS...
I have owned guns in the past, and served in the military. I lived in Israel for 7 years. There we all carried guns. Despite the news we don't live in bomb shelters. Ok so some nut blows himself up every now and again, but we go about our daily lives. Just because 7 or 8 people a day die from violent crime in New York doesn't mean people stay home. What I can say is that petty crime like theft or robbery hardly ever happens there. You wouldn't rob a seven eleven if the shop owner and three shoppers had M 16s straped to their sholders. I am not saying that guns stop crime, but in many cases, like rouge bears in Alaska, they have their place. I think most of us are law abiding citizens, and owning and safely using fire arms would not impact us as a whole.
And now a word on PARENTING...
I do agree there is a problem with parenting in the US. I am not sure that a conservative movement is the right answer. I think to many parents want somone else to raise their kids, and not them. We are so up tight about abuse, that parents are afraid to discapline their children. Hiting is not the answer, but parents have lost their ability to parent, out of fear. After living abroad, including some time in the UK, outside the US there is a strong sence of family. Parents, grand parents, Aunts, Uncles, and cousins are all very close. it might be due to the geographic dispersion in the US, but the sence of family is much stronger in other parts of the world.
My wife's younger sister was wondering about birth control. She is 16, and ok I am sure there are lots of opinions on this, but I only using this as an example of how family works. She didn't feel comfortable about talking about that kind of "stuff" with mom so she talked to her cousin who got her sorted with the doctor, and of course talked to her about being safe etc.. Her cousin then let mom know what she did and said not to tell her.
Well my mother in law was fine with that, and eventually it got out in the open, and my sister in law was happy, but the important thing was there was that support structure from the same family with the same set of priciples to guide her. That is what we are missing in the US.
I work very hard, and sometimes long hours, and weekends. I do make the effort to try and spend quality time with my kids. I took my daughter to her first hockey game the other night. She had so much fun, and it was just me and her together. Those are things the will stay with us both.
Ok I will get off my political soap box now...

here is something you might consider; i use the radioactive material that is inside of smoke alarms, not enough radiation to really hurt some one but it is still detectable with a geiger counter. i use this on all of my valuable items and geiger counters can be had rather cheap at hamfests or surplus stores. i have recovered 3 guitars 1 amplifier and a moped using this method. and believe me when they discover it's radioactive you ought to see the look on their face! it's a kodak moment! they can be glued onto any surface and even painted over.

Wow... And I think NY Is like 33rd on the Crime rate list in the US

Still sucks though... I'm renovating my house and one of the contractors grabbed my 9Zwc2 (about 4 mo's old). Just sold my WC1 a few weeks before that... What really kills me is I was programming another heli and left the campac in.

dsilver, very well said .. I agree with everything you said .. It is the state of the parents that is the real problem..Maybe one of these days things will turn around in this country as far as familys go .. But it will take things getting alot worse before that happens .. Also in order for that to happen ,you have to get the government out of peoples lives and make people responsible for their own actions .. Right now people always have someone else to blame for everything .. from cancer from smoking to their kids getting in trouble in school to their hair being died the wrong color .. Someone else should pay for their own mistakes , why not the rest of society ?After all the rest of society allowed it to get that way..

Not so long ago..

I agree crash...

Another case in point. Folks like to worry about guns. say we don't know how to handle them properly. For the entire time I lived in Israel I only heard of one shooting death that was an acident. By this I mean a gun went off while cleaning and killed a kid.
Now lets put this in perspective...
It is friday night.. Me and my brother in law, and six of his friends are all back from the military. Each one of us carries one or more wepons. M 16a, M 16b, M 14, and small side arms to boot. We would all throw them in a rack by the front door. Now 12 or so family show up for dinner. Kids are there from 6 months to 13 years. Not one of them ever got close to the wepons. We were better armed than most small militia groups but not one child ever even entertained the thought of touching one. Why??? They knew that they were dangerious. Their older brothers, and sisters had warned them, not just because mom and dad said so. For most of us we also have had first hand knowladge of the damage they can do. Unlike US news, overseas they don't filter out much. It might seem shocking, but it certantly drives home the truth. Life is not like the A Team on TV. For every action there is a consiquence, and kids learn this very early on. Parents and family supported one another with like values. regardless of race or religion, when you have that support net of like values then your children will understand. I have noticed kids seem to have lost the respect your elders ideal. I know I was very wild when I was younger, but I still wonder why I see some kids have zero respect, and yet I seemed to turn out ok. I was a latch key kids of the 70's and 80's, and I was wild, but I never lost sight of who my parents were, and that they knew best. I might have fought them tooth and nail, but there was still the respect.
Oh well hope we can all just find the guy who stole his heli and get out some much needed fustrations!!

This will sound unbelievable

But a generation ago, here in Alaska, we had rifle class in school. Students took their own rifles home and back, ON THE BUS. Never a problem. Kids were educated to respect the deadly tools.

No school buses were ever hijacked

Guns are not part of our consitution for hunting purposes. The gun rights are in there to keep the government in check. It is what keeps the goverment from stepping out of bounds and controlling us.

Hitler's first step was disarming the German civilians, the rest is history.

America is not perfect, we created Michale Jackson. Only in America can you be born a poor black man and be arrested a rich white woman!

Pullpitch ,, somehow that makes sense ...lol
I never had to teach my son about guns he was with me anytime he wanted to go shooting .. he even helped me reload them .. I taught him from as young as I could that guns dont kill people do and to have respect for them .. Unfortunatley it is a different world now .. the kids are told guns are bad, that the police will protect them and the government is you friend .. also the people that kill from crashing airliners and blowing people up with themselves are just poor misunderstood people and that we should all feel bad for them ..Their religion has nothing to do with it and that we probably desirve it for supporting people they dont like .. Well it is time we woke up and smelled the coffee and took a look at what is happening in this country and take it back .. The bleeding hearts are going kill us all and then they will be the first to cry foul .. Like you said Hitler and Stalin both did the same thing that is going on here in this counry right now by making scape goats and taking our rights to protect ourselves away..Once that is gone the next will be the right to say anything against the government or anything that will be deemed politically incorrect at the time ..Also anyone that dont believe what I am saying ,all they have to do is read the papers and see the government is already rattling the saber to take your freedom of speech away ..

PullPitch,

Sounds like a twisted interpretation of history and government bureaucracy........

let me guess, your a NRA member? NRA is like the tobacco companies, fighting to keep deadly products legal....

I wonder how refusing gun 'safety' laws is keeping the government in check? and im still wondering what kind of super secret brain devices they have waiting for us...in order for them to keep us in check and under control...hahahahaha what a bunch of Bull.....

IMHO i think people need to wake up from the wild west....

Yes, i have served in the military, and owned a few in the past, i grew up...

Im not gonna shoot some buffalo for dinner, or some dumb teenager sneaking in my house...i have bats for that

I'm too polite -

to respond in the proper manner. Someone less politcally correct will chime in though, I'm sure.

FYI

The Government makes more form tobacco than the cirgarret companies make, then they sue the cigarerret compnies for making them, just so you bleeding hearts feel better.

I'm not NRA, I am not a "registered" gun owner.

Airbags and hospital germs kill more people than guns.

I am sure our military is better off without you.

Have a nice day.

whatever, sounds like more governmental pessimism to me...especially when taking facts out of context...

as to your rebuttal, taxation of tobacco (at least here in CA) was induced to discourage smoking, improve education, and help with medical research, not to make "bleeding hearts feel better", the other taxes are simple "sales" tax. People sued tobacco companies because of the lack of "Hazardous Information". So its only the old fogeys smoking cigs with no warning labels winning...

there is no National Association defending Airbags and hospital germs

And the military loved me, 3+ rows of ribbons in 4yrs...and more....

Thanks for the wacky left coast report

I'm sure you served in Clinton's demilitary, (meals on wheels we call it up here).

Or was it the French military?

Sounds like you got out just when it got real.

(LOL for the true soldiers/defenders of freedom)

Now that you are grown up I'll bet you vote to take my hunting rights away. We use guns even while fishing. You don't pull a 200lb halibut into the boat without a little lead in his head. If you dont like guns I'm fine with that. Lets agree to disagree. But please, I choose to eat wild food that didn't grow up knee deep in its own crap and full of hormones. And I dont want to explain to someone why I had to let a bear eat a family member for political correctness.

Please realize grocery stores are not around the corner for everyone and some of us like it that way.

You are obviously right where you belong. Some cant even read a warning lables down there (the lables have been there how long?), and then blame the others for their own stupidity. Have a big hamburger tonight for me, please.

This reminds me of my favorite joke:

Q: Why are so many streets in France lined with trees?

A: Because the Germans like to march in the shade

true soldiers/defenders of freedom!?!?

"true soldiers/defenders of freedom"!!!!!????........guess everyone else who died must of had thier heads up there ass...

Guess nobody remembers the 1000+ who died during Desert Storm and Desert Shield(Clintons Demilitary??? hahaha......It was Bush Sr. who declared war!!)....or the soldiers who died in Afganistan? or the Soldiers in South Korea? Vietnam, WW2/1??? or the soldiers who just died for being american elsewhere...

Morons, wake up!!!

All people who serve thier country at 'anytime' in history are the "true soldiers/defenders of freedom"

and FDNY was not the only people who died either!!(stupid car stickers)

F.Y.I.
I joined during war and conflicts under Bush Sr. , i worked on the catapults and arresting gear on a carrier(20hrs/day....7days a week....10months a year)...I seen many planes leave loaded with missles and come back with only a couple rounds left...some to never come back...if i remember correctly we got at least 50,000 'non-coalition' deaths during Desert Storm....think we also dropped more artillery in one day then all of WW2.....guess thats not real enough for u....

and thier deaths was no different then the soldier who died on the frontline, or back home on some training accident...

guess u people need a couple 747's to crash into your backyard to make it real....

BTW: I have friends in Alaska, they cook!

Then why are you trying to tear my country appart?

You are trying to tear apart the America's founding principals.

Thats means you are destroying America.

How can I not vocaly defend what my country is?

Why do you think guns are in the constitution?

If you like it better other places...?

My friends served in the storm, they dont sound anything like you.
