A few things:
(1) Always set the pinion height with a fully tight motor. If it is not fully snugged, the pinion height will change making the main gear wobble and strip.
(2) Once the pinion height is set, loosen the motor and find the high spot on the main gear.
(3) Once the high spot is found, push the pinion up against the main gear, at the high spot to where there is zero lash. ****IMPORTANT*** at this point, do not press it against the main gear, just push it to the point where there is zero lash.
(4) Spin the main gear and check again for the lash setting at the high spot.

Lastly, you can use the mod 1 main gear and pinion. You just have to choose the correct gear ratio.
Hope this helps....Ron

The pinion height will change maybe 0.05mm at the most between slack or tight motor mount bolts.

You can't use the Mod 1 pinions for the 5mm motor shaft on the 550.

60% of the time, it works every time!

I am just giving you the info that has allowed me not to have stripped gears.
Swap the shaft to 6mm. They cost $25

That's true, but you can change out the shaft. It requires also changing the counterbearing to 6mm ID and the washers. I stopped having issues with the main gear stripping once I figured out how to mesh it correctly, and stopped crashing. But I do run the Mod 1 setup because it opens up more gearing and motor options.
