Am I seeing things? There appears to be a factory drilled hole for the magnet in the Freya plastic fan.

The hole (not all the way through the fan) is in the exact location it needs to be and fits the magnet perfectly. Maybe is was drilled at the factory for balance purposes?

Wasn't that nice of Hirobo to do that for us??? They did it on the Sceadu too. Not sure if it matters, but on one of mine, I drilled another hole and glued another magnet opposite the other one for balance purposes. However, I didn't do that on my next one and didn't notice any difference...

Yes, that is what it is there for.

The more powerful Radio Shack magnet is a little too large
though. IMO, putting the second magnet in to counterbalance
it is of questionable value.

Freya Gear Ratio?

BTY, what's the ratio on the Freya. I think it's 9.5?

Yep... in stock form it's 9.5, it's on the front page of the manual. If you wanna know the computation its;

Main gear teeth / Pinion gear teeth = Gear ratio
95/10 = 9.5
93/10 = 9.3

Dumb question

What's the purpose of the magnet? I've never heard of that.

The imbedded magnet rotates with the fan and triggers the sensor that's mounted underneath. That's how the governor knows what RPM the engines at.

The magnet is what a GV-1 Govenor works with the electronic sensor Which picks up the magnetic field as it passes over the sensor. The Govenor uses that for adjusting engine speed to what ever is set.

Cool!

Boy, if you leave the hobby for a few years, you sure do miss a lot. That's some really trick hardware. I may have to look into that!

I use a GV-1 on my Futura but after having the magnets come loose three times I built an optical sensor that triggers off a 1/2" wide peice of foil...the foil doesn't weigh anything so no re-balancing of the fan is required! the infrared source/sensor is available from Allied Signal (pn#OPB703) for about $5.00 or less...add an old servo lead and two Radio Shack resistors and you're good to go!

BimmerM3, yea I was out of the hobby for a couple of months one time and when I came back, all my stuff was "old". Gyros have probably seen the most change recently. Helicopter kits too have changed drastically also.

Long time

Tell me about it, Rappy.

You should've seen my face when I found out that my "old fashioned" GYROSCOPE gyro was obsolite. I paid, like, $200 for it. I ended up getting a CSM 180 for $89 and it is SO much better. I suppose it's progress...

Maxx,

No night flying huh

Could you mount a light source near the fan so the sensor could still operate at night?

Mike,

That is a focused emitter/detector pair type of sensor. Night flight no
problem.
