Hey guys, what's up with the play in the tail rotor on Hirobo helis? My ZXX and EVO 50 both have the same setup - it flies great in the air - perfect tail rotor control, but on the ground, the play is just annoying. How do I know when my tail rotor is coming loose or it's just the play? Any way to fix it? Like I said, it's awesome in flight, it just bothers me never to know if my tail is vibrating loose....

That ZXX must have an upgraded tail rotor. The EVO tail is completely different from the Shuttle's. The Shuttle has a lot of side-to-side play, but it doesn't seem to hurt anything (built-in expo ). The EVO has very little play at all.

But I'm confused. You say, and I quote:

So, this begs the question: Why are you worried about "fixing" it? Don't sound broke to me...

If you upgrade to a Freya tail hub and grips and buy the thrust bearing you will have a triple ball bearing tail rotor and that will take the slop out. I

OK, just making sure. I'm not worried about in-flight performance - it's just when I check to make sure nothing vibrated loose or anything I usally tug on it - with the tail I can't because I don't know what's normal movement and when bolts start backing out or something...

Yes, the tail has some amount of play. But it's ok, many people are flying this heli and the control is excellent.

BUT, you may like to keep a watch on the tail blade grips. I have seen several broke in flight. So, it is a good idea to change it like maybe once every 6 months.

Look at the way it's built and you'll see that there is no backing out of bolts. The fiberlock nut may work loose if it's worn out from being taken on and off too many times but the only time mines been off, on my 22 month old Sceadu 50, was due to a crash.
It's normal for this TR setup and most of the new Military heli's have flex in their TR systems also.
It causes no problems with flight and it doesn't bind the thrust bearings at anytime of flight. Centrifugal forces will keep the tail working like it should.

This has been covered before.. Completely normal.... It's the basic design of the bearings.... They are doing their jobs, now do yours.. GO FLY and sin no more...

Hey Jagboy, well said!
I have a day off tomorrow for thanksgiving break so I plan on flying ALL DAY LONG!! Kind of a bummer though, it seems whenever I can't get out to fly the weather is ALWAYS good but when I can, it's raining or just windy! Tomorrow's forecast is cloudy with scattered t-storms...... That still won't keep me away! Now me running out of fuel is a different story! My LHS doesn't sell anything with a nitro content higher than 15%! I have a buddy in Houston that drives up to our club every other weekend and brings me some go-juice.... how ghetto is that? Oh well we do what we have to...
Happy rotoring
