new hk 550 fbl kit versus used trex 550 fbl kit

For tight budget rc heli: Is the latest new hk 550 fbl kit better than a used trex 550 fbl kit ? Assuming using the same good quality electronics for both models, which do you think will fly better and save more money in the long run?
Thank you for your time and advice.

not even a question , not that i have ever seen the new HK 550, but have seen plenty 500's and 600's
Go Align from day 1!

If you are really that tight for money, then go for it. It will fly. You will upgrade parts down the road and will end up costing about the same, but it will get you up in the air.

I say go with the Align. You will be much happier in the end for sure.

HK quality is spotty at best. It's always the price that lures people in. If you can't afford to do this twice, go with the Align. Align is no world beater when it comes to quality either but it is head and shoulders above Hobby King.

If you really want a clone, go with RC Aerodyne. They may be a clone, but their parts are very good quality. I have used many of their parts in the past and still do..

Well, the question was specifically between Hobby King and Align. If it was opened up to other heli kits, neither of those are on my list. I like higher quality and feel it's the best value in the long run. But, I also keep my stuff for forever.

I'll second that. RC Aerodyne has nice stuff.

Go with align from the start. Less maintenance, tighter parts, great product support (where hk won't back their stuff). You'll be much happier.

Wish I could say the same. Just got done with a Chaos 700N build a week or so ago, had more than a few problems. Pinion wasn't threaded straight into the clutch bell, so it wobbled. Clutch liner was inferior, couldn't even get it off the ground. The liner wore away just trying to spool it up. Many of the holes in the frames were too small and had to be drilled out. Plus, the edges on the carbon fiber parts were sharp and splintery.

Had to end up buying the Align pinion and clutch bell anyway, should have just gone true Align from the start. But hey, I got exactly what I paid for.
That was the first clone I'd bought, and it was definitely the last.

Sorry to hear that. I have never dealt with their nitro stuff, just some of the E heli's. I haven't had any problem with quality to date.

If you plan to use better electronics in either one...The Align will be cheaper than the clone by a loooooong shot.

The Align Super Combos are cheap and if you buy all the components separately, you'll have more money in just the electronics than the combo.....and you'll still need a heli.

I built a clone 500 and ended up with over $1000 in it by the time it was flying right.

Of course that was early in my noobness and there were mistakes that caused me to spend more money but still....Unless you buy all clone components, clones are more expensive than the real thing.

I literally never use the word literally right.

I concur with the align stuff...
I bought "Tons" of "junk" heli's in my formative years ... and paid for it.... Finally took EVERYONES advice and bought an align...
never looked back (and saved money). Those other helis..? they still adorn my shelves as reminders that price isn't everything!!!!!

I think his question is now answered. 90% say the same thing. Go with Align from the start. Goodluck

Thank you again for all the responses you offered. It seems Align rules for quality and there's no doubt about it. Most of your subjective opinion favors the same. The combo system makes sense to me in terms of saving time and money.

I dont know if i would go as far as to say that, but between the two choices you asked about I would agree with that statement.
They used to say the reason you get two spares in an align package was because one was good and the other was not. They to have come a long way since those days from my experience.

Agreed. I wouldn't say Align is the quality leader, not even close. However between the choice of Hobby King or Align, it is clearly Align.

Yes, I would agree with those above.
But, for entry level cost/value..Align is clearly the step above...
Now if you are going to get really serious??? there are other options/upgrades that make the difference.

Actually the new Align heli's are every bit as good as anything on the market.
