HIROBO Turbulence - SDX - Freya - Sceadu > Freya with bad case of shakes

I just recently purchased a used Freya and I am now at the stage where I want to track the blades and set up the idle and throttle cut on the engine. Well I started the engine up no problem. The first thing I noticed is that I was not able to pull the starter shaft out because it kept spinning. Is this normal? I tried to stop it with my fingers but no luck. I was able to pull it out but I had to do it while it was spinning. Is this really bad for the engine?

So now I have my pride and joy running very nicely (a little on the rich side) at idle. After I am satisfied with how the engine is running I give it a little throttle to engage the clutch. The blades start to rotate but I notice there is quite a bit of wobble in the helicopter. I have it set up in normal mode so at around 1/2 stick I am at 50% throttle and around 5 degrees pitch. But I notice when I am at 1/4 stick this things seems to shake a lot. Is it because it needs to wind up more? (ie give it more throttle so the blades can settle). I made sure that both blades have exactly the same pitch in each one and that my paddles are aligned with each other. Any Ideas are very much appreciated. Thanks.

The start shaft on the freya is mounted solid on the clutch. It is suppose to keep spinning. Depending on the starter adapter, if it is a hex adapter you will need a oneway bearing in the start shaft. If it is the stock adapter, this is a oneway bearing that you would insert a smooth 6mm shaft into.

Did you actually get the bird in the air? If so did the shaking stop? At low headspeeds mine tends to shake until the blades are slung out. Let us know a little more about the shake.

I assume from what your saying that the previous
owner put a 6mm hex starter socket on the
machine.

That is NOT the standard start socket. The
standard one has a one way bearing built into it
and requires a special round start wand/shaft.

There is no other one way bearing in the system
so if you have a generic 6mm start wand (w/o
one way), then yes, it will continue to rotate.
You should get a new wand w/ one way. The
least expensive good one is $28 from Ricks

The Freya (like the Shuttles before it), have a
high landing gear and tend to wobble around
during spool up (particularly on smooth
surfaces) until they get up to speed and the
blades center themselves.

wobble

I have noticed the same thing. I also agree with the two previous replies. I would not worry about the wobble unless it continues after spool up. Mine wobbles until I get to about 1/3 to 1/2 throttle. I think there are 3 factors that contribut to the wobble:

1) narrow landing gear
2) blades may not be completely spun out
3) Hard rubber dampners in the head (which are good for 3D and aerobatics, not so good for precision hovering).

As far as a start shaft goes: I use the Proflex start shaft distrubuted by Miniature Aircraft. It has a one way bearing built into the start shaft at the point where it slips over the shaft coming out of the clutch shaft. With this mechanism you simply leave all adapters/one way bearings off of the shaft coming out of the clutch (you have a bare shaft) and slip the start shaft directly over it. Ron Lund sells these and here is the link.

Yes, the previous owner did put the 6mm hex starter socket in. Ok, so I will be ordering a starter shaft with the one way bearing.

And no, I did not get it in the air yet. Just brought it at most to 1/4 throttle. So maybe if I give it more throttle then the blades will even out. I was a little nervous giving it any more throttle because of the shakes it was having. I just want to take it slow and make sure there is nothing out of the ordinary. Thanks so much for your help and I will see how it handles once I give it some more throttle and get it in a hover. Might not be too soon seeing that the Cleveland, Ohio weather sucks. Thanks again for all your help!

My Freya and Shuttle wobble also with a low RPM. The first time I started on concrete with my Shuttle I thought their was something totaly wrong with it. Normally it is very smooth without any vibration and when I started from grass the wobble wasn't THAT bad.
This is one of the reasons why I don't like it to start from concrete.

Yeah, and that is where I started it. Perfectly smooth concrete. The thing was wobbling all over the place. And I didn't want to give it any more throttle in case something is wrong. I thought if something is wrong I want to play it safe and minimize my damages.

Do you have any training gear? If not, make or get some. And put the bird on the grass to spool it up. Should make things easier.

Thanks, John Cadwell
