i have a 55 gallon barrel of methanol sitting in the shed. it ran about $200 or about $4.00 a gallon. if i could find a place to get nitro from i would be making my own fuel. the only places i have found that sell it in 1 or 3 or 5 gallon jugs wants so much that its just not worth it. i think there is some hazardous shipping fees they tack on also. i wish i knew where these glow fuel company's were getting there nitro from. i thought about trying to thin out some %30 into %10 or %15 but im afraid the oil i would add might not play well with the oil all ready in there.

If you are going to make heli fuel from scratch in a residential area, I suggest you factor in at least $10,000 for a Lawyer.

Glow fuel is first quality methanol. There is a 2nd quality pharmaceutical grade that is used for stuff like auto window washing solvent that has trace chemicals in it that we do not need to be burning. So, it's 1st quality methanol, an oil package with the lubrication and viscosity necessary for a specific application, nitromethane and then there is a percent or a little less of acetone or some other ignition promotor. People commonly leave that last one out when they tell you what is in glow fuel.

Glow engines are too expensive to trust to some home brew fuel. Besides, these days the material cost to an average person is close to or more that you will pay per gallon of finished commercially available glowfuel. In the scheme of things, you can save more money crashing a little less.

I have tried using/making my own, you would use castor oil and methanol and 1 gallon 60% marine nitro fuel to yield 5 gallons of fuel

and I saved a whole 20$

why would you need $10,000 for a lawyer? People cook meth in their house all the time, they dont have lawyers or health insurance..... you and I flip those bills.

I know some of you guys like to think this hobby is operated by rocket scientists with special labs and Skunk Works testing facilities but it is not. Well... some. But generally those people go get real gigs. One prominent RC fuel company got it's start by mixing it in his apartment's bathtub. Not exactly splitting the atom. The hobby is essentially operated by hobbyists. Some just let it get more out of hand than others.

Isn't CHINA the only country producing it now.

I remember there was a big scare about a shortage when the olympics were there because they halted or limited production as a safety thing

You might try blending 80% methanol and 20% castor oil, and then adding a small amount of anhydrous hydrazine as an oxidant. Of course, anhydrous hydrazine is similar in sensitivity to nitroglycerine, so you would have to be very careful avoiding sparks, shock, and heat so that you didn't blow off one of your fingers. But if it worked, it might represent a cheaper form of "nitro" fuel.

You might even try adding some concentrated hydrogen peroxide mixed into your homemade methanol + oil mixture. Problem is, concentrated hydrogen peroxide will dissolve your skin off, and it would have to be mixed minutes before you go fly because it breaks down pretty quickly.

But if you're trying to save money and don't care about your fingers...

30% nitro fuel has 30% nitromethane. Oil is always about 20% irregardless of the brand or mixture. The rest is methanol (in this case, it is 50% methanol).

So, this means that 15% nitro fuel has, well, you guessed it, 15% nitromethane. 20% nitro fuel has...20% nitromethane. And 0% nitro fuel has........0% nitromethane.

If I buy pure nitro, oil, methanol and just mixing them like what I do with my gas engines (( mixing gasoline and oil)), does it work?

Its very simple.
A graduated cylinder, a 55 gallon drum of racing methanol, a 55 gallon drum of racing nitro methane, and a drum of a race quality lubricant intended to mix with alcohol and nitromethane.
I have watched and helped a good friend mix up many a cases of the 30%.
You do need to know what amounts will achieve the desired mix.

Klotz lubricants are the best.

Oh yeah, I forgot one small thing. A few drops of your favorite food coloring liquid. To get yer color on.
