sealerman.......

If you are not doing 3D flight, the necessity of placing the servo back on the tail is just not there. Eric is a high speed excellant 3D pilot and had the need to change the position of everything to get a better latteral balance to his Hornet for a better roll rate. We understand his needs.

But, most folks are not balls out 3D pilots and may never get there. Most of us just want to fly around a bit in our back yards.

Our company CP Hornet here flys very well, and does all the standard maneuvers you would want to do just fine with the stock configuration. It does have to be set up and flown around with finesse. Thats the key. Fly the bird you have as best you can with the power curve you have. As your skills get better and towards 3D flight, you will automatically begin to see what your needs are going to be.

Dennis@deetee,

Sounds like you and Eric both agree that the one-way hub is important for the CP. There seems to be a variety of one-way options, can you tell me the part number(s) that I need? Are there any other important parts suggestions? I want to make one final order and get everything I need ---

Also, could you explain your comment below, what is the "jam" you are referring to? Sounds like something bad, best avoided.

"At the same time, I would not fly any collective without a one-way on it. In case of a jam, at least you will have some opportunity to save it."

Thanks,
Paul

Have you received your tail rotor yet? bolt it on and let us know your findings! I'm pretty sure the gain will go WAY up.

Hi Dennis

I put the servo way back on the tail to dampin the tail vibration and it worked.

Thanks

my thoughts on the one-way: about the only thing I think it's good for is minimizing crash damage. You can click the throttle hold before impending doom and yet still be able to cushion the resulting crash, maybe saving some gears or a tail boom.

I'm tempted to add some weight to my flat bottom blades and attempt some auto's, but the thing drops like a greased brick when trying to auto with the symmetrical blades.

Hi,

I still can't believe the differance moving the servo to the rear has made. The vibration is gone and the heli is flying awesome. It is almost worth the $ and aggravation.

I think a properly made tail rotor will have the same effect, without adding weight to the tail.

Any luck yet Paul?

Hi Crasher,

You are right, but I think what was happening is that the small vibration was being amplified on this one for some reason. or maybe I'm just being to picky with it. Alls I know is that it is flying great now and I am happy with it.

Smiling Sealerman.

Probably is a lot of vibration and the added weight dampened it. The vibes ARE coming from the UNTRUE work of MS tail hubs

It doesnt help that the tail rotor spins at precisely the resonant frequency of the tail boom.

Hi Guy's

I like the set up for the servos, battery, gyro and rec. that Eric talked about. I have another Hornet that I am going to try that on. The servo wires on this Hornet are cut short to save on weight and it has limited me to this one set up.
Does anyone know a good place to get 3 cell LiPo packs?

check out parkflyermotors.com. they seem to have a good price for the 3s etec 1200's.

However, i'm personally waiting for someone to be a guinea pig and try out the 850 irate cells from cheapbatterypacks.com. so far it looks like he's not selling them as assembled packs, though.

Crasher,

All metal tail parts are in. The metal tail looks DAMN cool !! Hope it flys as well as it looks. I had the head pulled and ran the tail up to 10,350 rpm (~2300 rpm head speed) and it was as smooth as glass. No vibration visible on the tail housing and the tail shaft was so steady it didn't even look like it was spinning. This is running with NO bearings in the tail boom - just the Walt drive shaft. Huge improvement over what I had (stock shaft with two upgrade bearings) that had nasty vibration over 1950 rpm. Still waiting for the GY240 to come in before test flights can resume.

Exactly the news I expected. Most don't give the tail rotor a chance and all went for the gearboxs....??? mine was fine, but I will say Andy's could be better due to the offset of the arm.

Deja_Vu,
I was looking at FMA Direct for some new Lipo cells and they have an fm 5 channel reciever that has a fail safe program for about $100.00. It is featured on their home page. It is available in either positive shift or negative shift. Futaba is negative shift. It is also a dual conversion. It is small. It also has a plug for a test lead. It records information about signal strength and fail safe modes. It is worth checking into.

PXB - Walt Drive Shaft

Walt's Drive Shaft, does it seem pretty solid, does it have a lot less windup, do you think it will make quite a difference for the tail whipping? Just curious, thinking about buying one.

The single most popular Rx for the Hornet now a days is the Berg Mini 5DSP Rx. That Rx is the lightest and most glitch free Rx for micro helis. With the "Digital Signal Processing" Berg has built into this Rx, it acts very much like a PCM Rx. The FMA one is fine, but does cost more.

With Rx technology the way it is today, it really does not make any difference if they are single conversion or dual conversion. In the old days, it made a significant differance.

The 2 battery packs that are being used with brushless set ups on Micro Heis is the 3 cell E Tech Li-Poly packs and the Thunder Power Li-Poly packs, both from Bishop Power Products. We are out of stock on those at the moment.

airwolf,

I replaced more than one tail component, so I am not sure if the Walt drive shaft or something else fixed my vibration problem (bad vibration, onset at around 2000 rpm). But here are my impressions of the Walt drive shaft so far -

1.) This is a first rate upgrade well worth the $$
2.) I have no visible vibration up to 2400 rpm (I believe something in the drive shaft was the problem before).
3.) Even if there were no performance improvement, this is such a clean, simple, no fuss installation it would be worth it anyway.
4.) The cost isn't that much more (and may actually be cheaper - $26 from dee tee) than the recommend 2 to 5 upgrade bearings.

Best of luck,
pxb
