I took the gasser whiplash plunge

I could not stand it anymore, I went ahead and pre-ordered my whiplash gasser flybarless, I also ordered a custom canomod canopy for it with my color scheme for $89, I am going to move over everything from my flybarless spectra g with the rc conversion and hanson 290rc 3d max pro.... what do you guys think the spectra's airframe is worth with mavrikk g5 pro blades and the helibug rc conversion and rjx flybarless head?? no motor or electronics... also will come with extras:

extra clutch bell, 14 tooth pinion, 89,90,92,93 main gears. extra fusuno canopy, custom az. heli canopy (see gallery). most of the ball links are quik uk with the washers to lock them on.

I'm still flying the spectra until next month when the weather gets worse or the whiplash comes in....

Just wondering what I should ask for on the spectra g chassis???

PS congrats on the new whiplash! should be a hoot with a 29.

It is kind of hard to know right now until we see how many people are going to do what your doing. There might end up being a few spectra's for sale. I'm not in the market for a spectra since I already have one but I don't think I would want to pay much over half the price of a new whiplash. I would guess the new whiplash will be around $1000 kit, no blades or engine so what your selling might worth $5-600? Any more than that and I think I would just buy the whiplash.

I would like to do the same thing your doing myself but there is one other thing to consider, what if the spectra is a better heli after some of you guys get this thing and start flying it. Just looking at the whiplash gasser it looks like it is going to be slightly heavier but can probably run with a bigger rc engine than the spectra can with a puh engine. I think there are some guys that think the old 1005 is better than a Spectra.

I think I have it sold, with the helibug conversion, rjx flybarless head and mavrikk g5 pro blades and 2 custom canopies.... I was offered $800.00 I think that is pretty fair price.... I will be moving my electronics and engine over to the whiplash when it comes.... thanks for all the help guys, I dont think the spectra has lost any value at all... worst case you dissassemble and sell the parts and get more that way.... the helibug is worth $200 alone, the head $100 the blades $75 the canopies $50 each, the tail boom with all tail parts included $100, the main chassis including aluminum parts $100, the clutch assemblies and main gears an easy $100. and that does not include all my spare parts... if you do the math that $775 right there... so $800 is a fair price right???

Take the money and run. Once the shiny new gasser is in stores you won't do nearly that well.

Why not

Keep the Spectra and add the Whiplash to the fleet?

I got my 1005 still from 1997 and just today reached 2800 flights on it. I could have sold it a while back but I keep it, flies great, and is the first gasser MA came up with.

Then I got my Spectra in 2005 and its my 2nd gasser bird. Between the Spectra and 1005 they are my workhorses that I take to funflys. They fly a little different from each other, I feel the Spectra is a little crisper / sharper than the 1005 but I need at least 2 gassers in case something happens to one the other is still good to fly while you are fixing the first.

I, like everyone would like to have a Whiplash as well. Does that mean I'm going to sell the 1005 or Spectra? Absolutely not. I want to have one of each gasser MA has made. And besides, the 1005 is becoming a museum piece, only 200 flights now short of 3000!

Raja is the only one who can make me feel good about investing a fortune into a Spectra which has brought me zero enjoyment because I've never been able to fly it. Thanks for the encouraging words, Raja. I am glad to see that you're still able to get so much pleasure out of your MinAir gassers.

Justin,

Raja really does have a nice fleet of MA gassers! I can vouch for that. He flys them well and keeps them in tip top shape. If you want your spectra flying right send it to him, you won't regret it.

Sounds like were cooking with gas....

I just saw the Whiplash manual on Facebook. It's an incredible design. It is definitely the right time time to say "bye bye Spectra".

You don't buy a heli as an investment any more than you buy a daily driver car as an investment. You buy a quality machine that you will enjoy as I still enjoy my Min Air 1005. When you were considering buying the Spectra a few years ago you really did blow it as you should have bought gold.

Setup is everything, All my heli's can fly far better than I can pilot them

I've bought a few helicopters which have been good as gold and brought me tremendous joy week after week, month after month, year after year--and returned much more than my initial investment in sponsorships, etc. But the Spectra has been a tremendous money pit and I will not miss it when it is gone. The new Whiplash represents the future of the new Miniature Aircraft and the Spectra (Fury/Stratus/1005/etc) represent a totally different company which is slowly fading out of existence. Let's face it. The only comparison between the new Miniature Aircraft and the old Miniature Aircraft is the name. The design of the new MinAir helicopters is light years ahead of what the other company was making in late 2007 when I bought my Spectra.

You seem to be the kind of guy that see's alittle over the horizon and seems to think it must be better than your assumed sorry state now.
That is what all advertisers rely on to keep pumping out products that are no better or sometimes better than what you have ,,,but in either case ,,to take your money. Kinda like a junkie waiting for their next fix..

The Whiplash gasser design is much, much better that the Spectra. Let me list just a few of the ways:

#1. Direct to swash servos
#2. Very low parts count
#3. Uses RC engine instead of PUH engine
#4. One-way bearing inside the pinion
#5. Swash driver integrated into headblock
#6. Single side frames

Kudos to Chris Lund, Brian James, Jeff Green, Jeff Miller, and Bobby Watts for bringing to market such a great design. Bob and Tim were nice guys, but they never could have come up with something as elegant and as simple as this helicopter.

Comparing the Spectra to the Whiplash is like comparing the Model-T Ford to the Chevy Volt. Generations apart in their design. Take a look at the manual for the electric Whiplash which was published today:

Gotta admit it looks pretty nice. I like the looks of the assembly manual and how it is written w/pictures on the same page.

All I can say is after seeing the initial models at Ircha, and doing more research here and other places, and now the looks of the manual.... Its a no brainer... at Ircha I decided to convert the spectra with the helibug and modified 290 rc because I could easily transfer everything over to the new whiplash when it came out... I am simply giddy with anticipation....... I even ordered a custom canopy from canomod for it..... they should both arrive about the same time.
For now I have decided to keep the spectra g. My buddy who offered $800 for it is willing to wait, and so am I. I cannot fault the spectra g it is an awesome machine, a little over engineered but awesome none the less, and with the flybarless and 290 rc motor a real treat to fly, I just think the simplicity of the whiplash and the design will make maintenance and repairs so much easier, not to mention less vibration by design..... It is just an inevitable upgrade to the sport that must be considered heavily..... So I stand that any spectra g airframe with some upgrades and maintenace should be worth $700 to $800 and if you let it go for less you are cheating yourself because it is still an awesome machine and a viable entry point into the gasser hobby for anyone... heck I may just keep it as Raja suggested....

heck I may just keep it as Raja suggested....
Definately do as you need more than one machine to be able to fly all the time. If one is down for some reason, the other is still good to take you to the field or to continue having fun at an event.

I've heard stories of people going to a funfly and dorking their one machine on the first day, then all of a sudden they have been reduced to watching the rest of the event due to that. I've also had some boo boos myself with an auto gone bad and many a times had to rely on my 2nd machine to get me through the weekend.

Nothing wrong in having 2 gassers in my opinion

or 4 or 5.....

I wouldn't be so hard on the old reliable Spectra-G. Yes its from another era but once they are properly setup they are tuff! Personally I think the Spark conversion for it solves most of the issues that needed to be improved.

Will the Whiplash be better........yup. A lot more time has been spent focused on how to make it better than was done with the Spectra. WG is a much simpler model to build and maintain plus it incorporates all of the current thinking on what makes the most sense for a gas helicopter.

If you're not flying a gasoline helicopter
You're paying 10 times too much for fuel!!

You can say that again. I've been grounded for months because I only have one heli. Now don't ask me why.
