Can someone tell me what the difference is in these two??? Are they the same???

DSM2 uses two frequencies per initialization and keeps them.

DSMX also uses 2 frequencies, but hops between them.

Both of these roughtly translate into 'shoulda boughta Futaba'.

So in your opinion which one is the better to get???

I wouldn't purchase either. I would get FASST.

What is FASST?

No issues here on my DSM stuff. FAAST is just another option from Futaba --- everybody has their own biased opinions.

I don't see any Bind and Fly stuff coming out on the market for FAAST stuff so if you fly airplanes or do any other R/C, your options are decreased for BNF stuff aka Parkzone, E-Flite, etc.

from a technical standpoint, futaba FASST should be more robust than JR/Spektrum DSM. FASST constantly changes frequencies, while DSM2 and DSMX lock in on a fixed pair (though X is a bit more flexible than 2).

In actuality, you need hundreds of pilots, or some serious 2.4-band interference, for there to be a noticeable difference in signal quality between DSM2/X and FASST

I have flown DSM2 since it came out aprox 4 years ago. Have had no issues at all period. Also have flown DSMX on a Trex 450 and 500 for about 3 months with a DX8. No issues with it either.

They are both good systems. IF you ever have a problem, Horizon Hobby service beats Hobby Services hands down. IMO

Ok guys thanks for the reply and info, I am going to go with two satellites and no RX, with my FBL system. Now I just need to figure out which FBL system 3GX, or Skookum 720, or V Bar??? Also undecided on the ESC maybe the Jive!!!

Really, one of the frequencys is 2.4 whats the other one it locks onto
Just like on 72mhz, which operated on specific frequencies within the 72mhz band, for example 72.010mhz, 72.030mhz, 72.050mhz, etc,
The 2.4ghz band is divided up into "channels" in much the same way.

*facepalm*
There is more than one channel inside the 2.4 GHz frequency band....

The various microwave bands, 2.4 GHz included, have a crapton of frequency space inside them, which is part of what makes them so attractive to modern wireless devices.

the DSM2 modulation picks 2 clear channels within the 2.4 band, say it picks 2.455 for one and 2.417 for the other, and uses those 2 until power cycled. DSMX does a variation of this, though i am not clear on the differences. FASST does not limit itself to 1 channel, it uses an algorithm in the Tx and Rx to roll through all of them, only staying on one for a few milliseconds at a time.

There are differences in the way they work as posted but dsmx is for high volume pilots at one place . If you fly at a field and it's 5 pilots you will be ok ,if you fly at a comp and there are 100 pilots dsmx is added security.

I stole it ,flew it and gave it back ;)

Marketing info:

http://www.spektrumrc.com/DSMX/
What DSMX™ adds to the tried and true wideband technology of DSM2™ is the extra interference protection and faster reconnection times of frequency agility. But DSMX isn't just another frequency hopping system. It is wideband agile.

DSMX frequency shifts are coordinated using the most advanced FHSS algorithm ever seen in an RC application. Unlike other FHSS transmitters that all hop in the same fixed patterns, every DSMX transmitter has its own unique frequency shift pattern calculated using its GUID (Globally Unique Identifier). And each pattern uses just 23 channels in the 2.4GHz spectrum.

By adding the agility of unique frequency shifts to the superior interference resistance of a wideband signal, and limiting those shifts to a smaller portion of the 2.4 band, DSMX transmitters provide on-channel interference protection that is simply second to none. The result is quicker reconnection times and superb response in the noisiest 2.4GHz environment.

Once Spektrum gets the s/w bugs out of DSMX, it will be roughly comparable to FASST and all of the other brands. Pick and stick is dead. The real surprise is that all of you bought the DSM2 hype in the first place.

It wasn't hype. It was a great system 4 years ago. I was a very satisfied DSM2 user. It was also a lot better than XPS, which was the other 2400mhz system around at the time.
Futaba FASST didn't exist yet and no one even knew if Futaba was going to come out with their own 2400mhz technology.
Never once did I have to wait for a Frequency pin on DSM2. I can't say that about the alternative, which was 72mhz.
