DX7 Backup Error problem

Hadn't used my DX7 in a while, and I guess the battery drained, and sucked the life out of the flash memory lipo as well. They say that the silly thing is soldered on, so it has to be sent back to the factory.

Called Spektrum and they said it was a 2 hour wait to even TALK to support! What a pain. Dunno if they would pay for shipping, but seeing as how Im in CA and they are in IL I doubt it will be cheap.

So a couple questions at this point...
1. Is it worth it to upgrade to a different radio? I fly a Flash EPP, trex 450 and a little BnF Vapor.
2. If upgrading is advised, what is considered to be a good radio these days? I bought the DX7 beginning of 2008, things have changed I'm sure. Would like to keep the price below $400.
3. If I do upgrade to, for example, the DX8, will my old Rx's work?

Any other thoughts or advice?

Thanks!

Afraid the fault is yours .
Not something most wish to accept but true none the less.

Your questions by number:

1) your choice but mine would be to return the Tx to Horizon for repair.

2) no answer required based upon your stated conditions.
(Again, it is a simple fix at HH.)

3) yes your existing Rx's will work with the DX8 .
They will function as the DSM2's which they are.

Hey thanks for the response! I know it was my fault, didn't say otherwise- but I must say that it is a pretty poor design- I didn't even get 3 years out of mine.

Anyways, it is what it is.

Another question- you say horizon hobbies will fix it? I tried to call my local HH dealer and they said I would have to send it to Chicago?

Would be cool if I could repair it locally...

There is no backup battery in the DX7 it uses NV ram.

I think you mean Champaign, IL .

That is where HH is headquartered .

BTW
As a counter view to your "It's a poor design"
We see that posted regularly from those who have caused it.
However, with the Club fields I use and the large number of DX7's in service we have no one who has had a "Back up error" problem.

I am not saying that it wouldn't be nice to have a system with no possible error.
I am saying that in total it is a VERY small number who experience it.
In a micro sense the local experience, roughly ten clubs averaging 100 members, we simply haven't seen the problem.
It has been long known and generally, if not always, it is a flattened battery which causes it.

Frankly,I wish all the Tx designs were as trouble free as the DX7 has proven to be.

HH generally has a fast repair turn around so I would suggest that you send it in ASAP so that you can get back in the air.
Searching for ways around this IMO is simply wasting time.

Give them a call on one of their toll free numbers and ask for a service tech specializing in the DX7.
Then if there is a West Coast option you will know for certain.

Time's a wasting !

BTW, the only way I know of to cause the issue is for the battery to die with the power switch on, I assume it does some sort of save and graceful shut down when powered off with the switch, as opposed to dying with the switch on.

I will send it out- my understanding was that this was a known issue and acknowledged flaw in the unit.

But I totally agree that the circumstances in which it can occur are not found in standard use.

I think what happened with me is that the regular battery had gone bad. When I turned it on, it had enough juice to bring up the interface for a second and then it croaked- so battery out of juice with power on = backup error.

Not 100% sure of course, but regardless, I will get it repaired.
