I have an old concept 30 that I inherited and haven't been able to get the engine running since I got it. It seems that this is a perfect time to convert to an electric setup.

From what I read in your post the engine mount was the only custom piece you made. True? Since I lack the metal working tools you have do you have any suggestions as to how I could make the engine mount or would you be interesting in making another mount and selling it?

Also, I didn't see what blades you are using, and who is your supplier. I hear the original thin root blades are very hard to come by now a days.

Thanks for any advice you have.

Where did you get your gear/pinion? I'm trying to use a 1600kv motor on 6s so will need much less teeth on my pinion but how can I be sure it will mesh correctly with the concept 30 gears?

If you're referring to the gold-colored gear integrated with the clutch bell, that's a Century bell/gear from long time ago. But it's the same tooth count and size as the stock Kyosho unit.

If a higher Kv motor is to be used than mine, instead of using 6S, how about 5S?

The gears are module 1.0 profile to fit all gear stages of the C30. Also note that the first stage gear teeth are tapered by (as I recall) 5deg per gear. Take that into consideration when mounting your motor. My motor is mounted 10deg off-axis from the countershaft. If a non-tapered motor pinion is used, mount the motor at 5deg off-axis.

And I can't stress this enough: If you intend to use modern composit main blades (weight greater than 85g) and head speeds over 1800 rpm; you MUST use metal blade grips for the sake of safety! Trust me on that...

Good luck!

Thanks for your reply. I ended up working out the pitch of the gears and ordering a pinion based on that. Also calculated the number of teeth needed for the head rpm at ~1800. Could always decrease it on the throttle curve.

If I have any trouble with it I will probably go your route with a lower kv motor, I just happened to have a 1600kv lying around. And 6s because they're the batteries I already have, although getting them in will be a squeeze.

I'm also using the original blades It's not going to be a performance model for me, but scale. Here it is before I took it all apart.

Has anyone else noticed anything strange when clicking on nibnobsam's picture above?

Well the pinion came so I finally fitted the motor, took a while to get it to mesh properly but here it is

Good luck with it. Report back as progress is made. BTW, those blades are NHP, some of the best for the Concept. There were two main weight classes of the 515mm blades: ~75g and ~85-90g. The former are "safe" up to 2200rpm on stock SR-X grips. The heavier blades popped the grips at over 2000.

Just a little FYI for all watching.

Had to adjust the motor mount to get it to mesh properly, but here is a little test before I fly it

Woohoo! Sounds like it has some balls!

Expect to strip teeth off the main gear unless to manufacture a bearing to support the underside of the gear directly underneath the bevel pinion.

Alternatively you can "over mesh" the main gear and bevel (shim the auto hub) until the two gears are forced together but I can't recommend that for long-term reliability. See the posts at the bottom of page one for more info.
