TDR ESC? YGE or Hobbywing HV 120 or something else?

I'm on the list for a TDR, and i'm picking out equipment. I already scored a pyro 700-520 for a good deal, now i'm looking for an ESC.

I want to use VBAR gov, so the jive is out of the question, but i've heard the YGE 90HV and 120HV work well, but their on the expensive side and one of their selling points is an excellent gov.....which i don't need.

I've heard some pretty good things about the Hobbywing HV 120 Platinum, it works with VBAR gov well, and can handle the load a TDR with a 700-52 puts out and stay reasonable cool. Hard to beat the price at $150ish. I know Mr. Mel uses several, and to me thats a real thumbs up for the Hobbywing.

Anyone else have experience with either? Is there something else i should be looking at? I will not use castle, I've had a few bad experiences lately. I still have a castle on my 600, but may switch to something else in the future.

I'm really interested in the hobbywing, as long as its a quality ESC.

Thanks for the info guys!

I went with the hobbywing on my henseleit mp-xle and it is working great. Barely gets warm and that's pushing it too. I have used the scorpion 4035-500 on it and now I have the align 700mx swinging Radix 710 at 1950 and 2050 rpm. If and when I get the TDR I will not hesitate to put the hobbywing on it.

Another option--

you can also use the Megapower Future 120A esc...this is what the team TDR guys are using with the vbar gov..they can be purchased for $159 + shipping at Heliguru in singapore

I actually just bought one of these for my 2nd tdr..it is just like the Hobbywing but is supposed to be better construction and it also has a nice case and fan..

this is what it looks like on my TDR

I am using the hobbywing with Vbar gov on a couple other machines and it has been working perfectly as well

I'm using a Fusion Hawk 120 (the same as Robbe Roxxy and seams like the MegaPower is the same too) with a 4525. Works great... you can find setup information by Timo Wendtland at the VBar forum. He uses the same configuration.
YGE is nice too with an option for 14s. By the way there's a version where you get the phase signal right from YGE.

well, because the fusion was more and i couldn't find any in stock, i got the hobbywing 120hv. Anyone know the appropriate settings to run it at with a pyro 700-52 for the vbar gov? the closest info i have is "stock programming plus slow spoolup"

Can anyone validate the timing, pwm, etc....??

thanks!

I often thought about it but nervous about using the cheap ESC. Does the vbar gov need much work to tweak or is there arming issues?

That MegaPower ESC looks nice.

...and much cheaper than the Kontronik.

Vbar governor works great. No arming issues.. I use jive on my logo 600 and use the hobbywing on my Henseleit. In my opinion, the vbar gov is better. Just use a good bec; I use the super hercules bec; good to 14s. All the people at my field are surprise how cool the hobbywing comes down..

Hobby wing and cheap esc's

I'm very skeptical myself but MrMel has been running these hw escs for many months and hundreds of flights without failure

The megapower is better quality than the hobby wing so that why I got that one for the tdr

The vbar gov is noticeably better ...more powerful and MUCH more consistent than the jive...you can hear the difference

I have a bunch of flights on my hw with vbar gov and absolutely love it...but I still bought 2 new jive 120's for my other
tdr and trex 700e

I still like the "safety" of going with the jives

Only thing is Mrmel often flies in very cold temps so hard to tell, in Australia it can get a lot hotter.

More info on HW setup?

Are the any config items i need to be careful with? I'm assuming other then turning the gov off and setting the pole count, leave everything else default?

Hw setup

If you're using a Scorpion 4035 you just set it up with 3 degrees of timing and turn gov off

Startup speed as slow as possible

Everything else at default

Anthony,

I'm actually running the 5025-440. What timing should I use for this?

How did you come up with 3 degs for timing? Trial and error process?

Timing

I got the 3 degree timing suggestion from MrMel

I would try the same setting for the 5025

You set poles in the vbar program
