Finally got my new motor just came out. Carb slider redesigned a little, Carb inlet way bigger motor a little taller. Got it barely installed with very little clearence. I dont think they will be able to make these motors much bigger. Anyway looks pretty good.

Not Off To A Good Start

Well I hope people read this before purchesing. I took it out today started fine no flat spot mid stick like the 53h had hovered for about 30 seconds super rich then it cut out. I thought it was just super rich but when i tried to spin the fan it was seized after further investigation heres what i found.

I really hope heliproz takes care of me

funny but not funny enough to raise my spirits. I saved for for two months for this engine heliproz told me the best they could do is have me buy another one and they will refund my money hopefully in 4 weeks max after they get done with great planes. But this is not a total promise. Im so bummed out im about to just give up. So all i can do is send it back and hope for the best

That sucks, what about trying to bypass Heliproz and contact Great Planes Service and say - you need to see this, con rod on a just released engine just snapped. If you get lucky, they should be VERY interested...

Yea i think and really hope heliproz will be nice enough to just replace. But this could end up being a big issue for thunder tiger if this starts to happen frequently. The motor itself is sweet and at almost 2.5 hp for 229.99 you cant beat it but hopefully this isnt a case of you get what you pay for. Hopefully i just got a lemon

30% + super rich = hydro lock

Jeff, I was thinking it might have been hydrolocked, too. but when he said it was in the heli and hovering for 30 seconds before it quit, how could it possibly have hydrolocked?

Was the rod bent or just broken at the crank pin? What did the glow plug element look like?

OMG if the motor was running it didn't hydrolock. Maybe if it was so flooded he couldn't turn it over, and in a moment of utter dumbness he put a 6S Sullivan starter to it, it could have bent it.

However, con rods are known to break, esp with break in as the metals heat cycle. A flaw in the material can and will be exposed.

Short of him doing something monumentally stupid, which I don't gather from his post. It's a manufacturer defect.

NOW, the trick is going to be getting GP to replace it. If Hobby services is involved in the process like they are in OS service. I'll give you a good luck and a wave b/c they will pull out a BOOK of excuses a mile long to deny that warranty. The good news is after they get done blaming you for the product fault, they will "offer" you a "discount" on repair that will only be about 1/2 price of the motor, maybe 3/4 if you are unlucky LOL. Sorry I don't mean to laugh at your misfortune. It's just comical that Hobby services gets away with stealing so easily in this hobby. Stealing to me is taking someones $ w/out earning it. Warrantys are there for a reason, and Hobby services seems ok with denying all but about 1-2% of warranty's. I hope you fall in that 1-2% for your sake, as with 2-3 runs on the motor and a clearly broken part, it's less easy to claim "no afterrun oil" "bearing rust" or other BS excuses they like to haul out. Although their fav seems to be "lean run". I'd take some very very VERY good pics of the head/piston and side of piston/ring to document how they look. If they look burnt etc... Then yeah it's been run lean. If not, then their lean run theory goes to pot, though they may still try it as metal bits will scar up the liner and they might try to say that was the lean run lol.

They'll fix it. It looks like the bronze bushing departed from the conrod and once that happened the rod went real fast. In the past Ace/TT service would have fixed this without question and Hobby Services should too. I would prefer to see how they handle the issue before I'd draw on possible past transgressions with OS engines as my baseline. Some folks like to constantly dredge up the past like that's an indicator of all things going forward.....it's not necessarily.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, any new engine should be opened up, inspected and put back together but only if you have the technical capacity to do it properly. If you don't, leave it alone.

Well guys thanx for the replies i dont know if i feel better or worse? Im shipping today i also talked to a guy a named lenny at Hobby Services i think it was he was kinda wierd to me but i hope it goes ok i got him to log down what had happened ect. They better replace if not this is rediculous i basically eat 250 dollars for 30 seconds of flight. My wife is pissed off as it is for spending the money then when she came to the park and watched it run for 30 seconds and then sieze up i think she was wondering why i am even in this hobby still. Looks dumb to her and just not worth it. But she doesnt understand as many dont. Well i hope they replace or im out for the summer atleast

Here is there reply:
Hello Kevin;

Yes we are working with him and his engine is due in here today.

We are going to send him a new one n/c and deal with Great Planes on the
warranty.

After talking with him and seeing the pics my evaluation is a con rod
failier not a hydra lock situation, especially since the engine was running
when it happened.

We have sold several but this is the first feedback we have on them so I
can't at this time recommend them untill we see how they are holding up.

I suggest you wait a bit untill we see if this is an ongoing problem with
the Redline 56's or not.

Hope this helps.

Thank you
