Thought i would pass this on as it does have some nice new features as found on the 600pro; ie, new auto hub and slant main gear, carbon tail-control rod, new designed tailcase etc.

i was pondering the 550 vs 600pro, and if the fb version has the new revised head as on the 600e fb pro, then im getting the 'new' 550 - may even stretch and hv it so swing 600mm.

Do not forger in your pondering that the 550 is a 6S and the 600 Pro is a 12S

Yes understand the 550 to be 6s, where as the 600 is 12s...it just the 600pro's frame doen't seem right to my eye, really im just weighing-up my options as funds are rather limited. i could buy the 600 only to get the urge to somehow re-framing it (re-sell600 frames) or to go with the 550 knowing that i'll be happy and it doesnt offend my 'eye!'lol. At a later date i would have the option of stretching the 550 to accept 600mm mains along with a HV 12s +bec(??) set-up it might be a noticably lighter than the pro.

Align also uses the new mod .8 auto gear 131T and tail drive gear 34T. This reduces the tail thrust by 15% compared to the old 550 3g.

I upgraded my 550 to the OWB and new tail drive gears and was very disappointed in the performance. I run 550 blades with 86mm tail blades at 2350. Stock with 520mm blades and 92mm tail blades may perform well enough but this is not confirmed by me.

Looks to me that they upgraded the tail case. Beyond that, its a new combo with the 3gx? That was my impression at least.

Edit: Also, did the prior 550E FBL need a reduction in tail thrust?

OTS thanks for the imput regarding the 3.85:1 tail reduction gear, i was wondering what HS and tailblade size combo that might be required with the 0.8 module 'upgrade' (??)

It looked to me though align had made a few nice little changes to the 550 - enough for me to now sway away fron the 600pro, as i like the idea of slant gear and new owb with added radial bearing etc.

550v2 might need a 'stretch' to run 550mm mains and 105mm tails if the HS is going to be run lower than 2350rpm using the 3.85:1 taildrive??

Stretch is one option. Not sure if 95mm would be enough or not without trying it.

You can always buy the old OWB, auto and tail drive gear to go back to 4.5. Then 550's with 86mm works great.

After noting the new 700e 3Gx is only $42 more expensive than the old 3G version, it is interesting/bargain-worthy to note that the 550v2 3Gx is $40 "cheaper/less expensive" than the outgoing/parallel 3G model!!

Tail it will hold!

2100-2400

Well Guys, we really appreciate your comments and or suggestions. From time to time there is a chance for changes and or modifications to be made.

Back in the day when we were design for 2100 or less head speeds we used the 4.5 to 4.8 ratio due to the headspeed that were present. Again back in the day say 10 years ago 1850 was the dialed in head speed.

Then we move to 2011, we design based on what we see most common at all flying fields around the world. Guys flying at 2100 and above, even on 6s Trex 600 ESP people have been going way beyond this. Any of you who attend fun flys know that this is very common. Now considering the New Trex 600 EFL PRO we have in fact taken these fact into consideration when designing the tail gear ratio for guys who may be you that are actually using head speeds beyond 2100. So to indicate why the 3.85 ratio was use was by design. For those that are going way beyond 2100. You all have buddies out there pushing their machines faster and harder than they have ever gone in the past.

Also like to point out that rather than not say anything, we have provided video of the 2200 head speed. Taking rotor head speed sample off a video screen that uses a similar chip as your gyros is not going to yeild accurate results. This is why I asked Alan and Danny to give you a video of 2250 and 2400 so you could see the difference. So choose your head speed and fly. But the video clearly shows that the tail is holding with no issues. Now if you want to stab the cyclic and collective in the corner and expect the tail to hold your going to have to set up your helicopter correctly so that you don't bogg your machine with maximum pitch and cyclic.

We'd like you to show your videos of your Trex 600 EFL PRO and show us a flight or two with your perferred head speed.

Like I mentioned, in the past 1850 was the zigging head speed. So rather than worry about headspeed, fly your model the way you like and have fun.

Hi Jeff the details above are for the 600pro, so with what has been stated is it safe to assume the 550 will have to run HS of 2800+rpm? Judging by the spec on the align web pages, both 550's have same pinion to main gear ratio, has the kv changed on the 550v2 3Gx supplied 600mx motor? If not, how will the deficit in tail rotor performance be balanced with the newly reduced tail ratio of 3.85:1?

Head Speed

Your not going to have to run 2800. But if you do run head speeds above 2100 as most are, you're going to need to start to consider your tail. Going way beyond 2100 with say 4.5-4.8 your going to have other problems. Rather than encountering those, we have made the changed to 3.85 on products such as the 600. So again, you can run your head speed as you feel appropriate to your flying style. Key point is flying. So whatever head speed you do choose make sure that it is appropriate for your flight needs. But if your asking if people do use head speeds above 2400, they in fact do. Lots of guys over speed and really don't consider it since in electric you don't have the sounds associated with this overspeed well not the same sound anyway. So have fun, and fly your model your way.

Jeff Fassbinder

Slant Main Gear Typo

Hello str8den,

Please note that we at Align have updated our website as there were a few typos on the website that we have changed. Please note that on the 550E V2 that the main gear is straight and not a slant type gear.

Hi Jeff,

I normally fly my 600ESP at 2000 which fairs well for my 3D style and longer flight times. How will that work with the Pro?

It's easy to find an excuse to do wrong. Hard is not to find an excuse to do right.

Thanks Jeff for clarifying the situation regarding the main gear.

like JohnDa i would also like to know if a v2 flybar is on the way, if so when can we expect its arrival and will it have the new 600pro flybar head??

550e v2

Ok I had the 600e pro gave it back echanged it for a 550e V2 3gx. now align says fly it like you wan't. Well you can't with the new geared tail if you like to do 3d at 2000 or 2100 you loose alot of your tail speed so what they should have done is make the 550e gear as a upgrade for those who want insane head speeds. At some point the blades will fly off what 3000 next year.I know alot of people that dont fly crazy head speed. so now I need to buy new gears for my 550e and why didnt they just give you a 100amp esc insted of 70 amp for some head room and you could update to a 600mm blades for people who like to sport fly plus I think the 600 esp is still a all around sunday flyer and has better servo conection like 2 rods to cut down on servo wear.

yes they came out with a new gear ...you order the old tail gears and put in the new main gear H60020a or h60020at both the same.I think they came out with the new gear because people were stripping the old gear and the new gear teeth are bigger.
