How to select correct engine for Pantera 50

Hello,

I am still fairly new to the heli world and need to ask about selecting an engine for my Pantera 50, or repairing the one I have. Currently the bird has an original 50 in it but think she has gone bad. It got super hot one day last week and hasn't been the same since.

It now has a loss of power after half throttle, this is after she is warmed up, seems the rpm's change up and down. So maybe the head gasket has blown?

So I am asking how to repair or how to select one of these 50 size engines for this bird. There seems to be a number of them and have found a few here and asking if this one is okay. How do you know what to select?

Are there any Pantera owners out there? Best places to buy an engine?

Thanks for any advice given, appreciate the help.

Cheers

The Hyper 50 is easy to rebuild.

It got hot so I'd say you need a ring for sure.Maybe a piston and sleeve.

Amainhobbies.com has all the engines and parts.

Bobby Watts and Bert Kammerer have a good "How To" video.

Episode 1 is the one I think.

No problem bro.
Is the Hyper 50 the engine you have or the one your looking for?

It's a good little engine for a first nitro.
Very easy to tune and work on.

It makes pretty good power too.

Hi,

I am really happy you took me to this site RC Smack, had not seen this in my searches when looking for other areas of help.

I like the explanations on this 1st video on engines you pointed me too.

Now I understand the mistake I made with the OS 50 engine, which is what I have, yes.

Ran the thing way to lean, explains why it got so hot, could tell the difference when I just started flying it, as it was all new, the bird and myself. Had adjusted the mid range on this 2 needle engine to about 3/4 turn maybe even as low as 1/2 turn. I had done this due to problems getting it to start, not realizing what I had done and not setting it back to the original setting.

Well as you can guess, and said before, it got hot, lost power and died. I am thinking, what the !?#$ happened.

I can say, this is the hard way of learning, but learned my lesson. Now to try and repair it if that's possible. Have found one on ebay over here in UK for, used, but says hardly used, whatever that can mean to someone. Very cheap anyway, so will compare the price towards the end of the auction to buying a new one, just to have another engine.

I have 2 other Hirobo's, both Shuttle Z ++, with OS32 engines, that I pick up really cheap and they are in excellent shape. As I said, just starting out and learning this hobby and now to go to the local Club that is fairly close to me and join.

Appreciate the help and guidance, pointing me in the right direction. Have been here in UK now going on 10 yrs, as I am from Ohio, US and I am an American & British citizen and transferred here with my company.

So as they say here in UK,

Cheerio.

Yes, from originally Bellefontaine, then lived in DeGraff, my kids all grown up all live in that area.

Before I changed jobs and got into Teaching Electronics, worked at AP Technoglass, made windshields for Honda in Marysville.

This is a small world for sure.

cheers

You can buy a good used 50 about as cheap as you can rebuild one these days. If it got that hot, you might have hurt more than just the liner piston and ring so poke around and pickup another engine. That'll give you a different carb to work with too.

Hi MartyH,

I agree with you on this as I have found after going thru a good video I found on how to rebuild a 50 engine that I had problems.

The liner does have score marks on it and the case has a hairline crack as well due to the high heat that occurred.

Was able to find a good used 50 OS engine on ebay for 50 and will receive tomorrow. But I also ordered a new head, head liner, gasket and case to rebuild the other one, which should put it back in good condition.

Will have to watch how I set the mixture on these and monitor the temp this time. Because as a newbie, did not know this was a vital thing to be careful for. Live and learn but at a cost unfortunately.

Thanks for the feedback, appreciate this.

Cheers

Until you train your ears for what to listen for, an infrared temperature gun is a handy device. Shoot for 250 degrees F at the glow plug. You have to take the reading fairly quickly because the large heads are very efficient heatsinks.

Anyway, I still have a model with an OS50SX as well as the newer Hyper and 55 variants and feel the original is as fine an engine as OS have ever produced with a nearly indiscernable power difference. Frankly, I attribute the many internet postings about how much more powerful the newer engines are to people replacing worn engines because in back to back flying, we find the difference is really only noticable to a pilot whom is good enough to make use of the extra power during some maneuvers, a rainbow comes to mind. However, most pilots feel the difference only in their heads (and their wallets).

Finally, I have a brief article on my website, which you may find helpful as it addresses disassembly for bearing removal/replacement and which will thus, be applicable to your repair. Here is the link;

There is no replacement for displacement. There will be a real power difference between the OS 46 and the current OS55. However, there is a lot of truth in what you say about a guy's seat of the pants perception of the new engine vs. old. To a great extent, they really are comparing their old worn engine to the power of a brand new one.

I noticed this post and It's been several months since the last input.
You happy now?
I must say that 250 deg F is a bit high unless your fly comp 3D and plan to change engines after each weekend.
