Hirobo Lama SA-315 Electric Conversion

I started this post about a year ago, when I flew my glow powered Hirobo Lama. The new OS-37 quit at the worst possible time, just as I had turned down wind. The resulting auto attempt was not great, and the damage to the heli was a bent tail truss where the blades had impacted the tail. Main shaft, spindle, needed replacement as well. However I must say that the damage was not excessive considering the impact it made. The reason for my decision to convert to electric was made that day.

My good friend Chuck Nowell and I kicked around a few ideas. I bought a motor mount from Great plains for a RimFire .46 motor, I also bought the motor as well. He modified the motor mount and we ran it thru the standard cluch and cluch bell that comes with the kit. The result was a fantastic almost turbine like sound and its neat to hear the motor run but the blades hadnt engaged yet, untill the rpm's come up. The first flight ended in complete failure, as we smoked the RimFire .46 motor. We thought that since it replaced a glow .46 engine it would be more than enough power to fly this heli.

With the OS-37 engine and calculating the gear ratios we concluded that the egine at 15000 rpm gives you about 1700 to 2000 head speed. The RimFire was rated at 800kv and we were using a 6s lipo which would have given us about the same head speed as the glow engine.

The motor stats are: RimFire .46
800kv
65 amp continued current
100 amp for 60 sec max current.
5mm shaft
So after some research we opted to buy the Scorpion Hk-4025 890kv motor. We new as soon as we got it that it was built way better than the Rimfire motor, wow what a differance. Much bigger motor. But as luck would have it, it did not fit the motor mount in the heli.

Chuck Nowell, is an excellent fabricator, and without his knowledge and help this project may have never come to its conclusion. Chuck built a heavy duty aluminum motor mount using his extensive tools in his shop. Not only did the motor mount fit, it was polished and looked like a part manufactured by Hirobo. Chuck not only had to build these parts but needed to tackle alignment of the motor mount, motor, cluch, and cluch bell. with out proper alignment the gear mesh would be so tight we eventually would burn that motor too. But he did an excellent job and everything was spot on.

Stats:
Scorpion HK-4025 890kv
Castle Creations Ice 100 amp ESC
Castle Creations BEC
Standard servos for flight control
401 type Gyro
Turnigy 3 cell 5000 mah lipo X 2 for 6 cells total.

The result is a great electric scale heli, the sound still similar to a small turbine, close but not exactly to it is way, way better than what is sounds like with the glow engine. The heli has plenty of power and is very smooth, seems that it vibrates even less than before. I have pictures, and we also took a flight video that we will attach to this post just as soon as we know how to post that on Runryder. Thanks Chuck for your expert help. Anyone need custom work or any work he is the man. Pics and video soon to come please visit this post or attachments to it for the pics and video.

Now its off to Mayday in Louisiana

Head speed RPM

Ok, yesterday we made some throtle curve adjustments. With the standard cluutchbell/pinion and gear in the kit we calculated head speed around 1500 or 1600. After bring the curve up to 75% we got 1820 during a hover. In significant pitch changes it dropped to 1800. After a five minute test hover the motor temp was 113 degrees. All in all running on 6 cells with a 890 kv motor it does very well. Pics and video to follow soon....i hope.

Hirobo eLama by Chuck Nowell

Chuck did a magnificent job of fabricating a motor mount to convert my Hirobo Lama 30 to electric power.

Here's a video of the maiden flight with old parts. Keeping the new parts for the Electric fly-in May 21 at our local field, Jax RC Jacksonville, Fl.

Wuuu. Huuuu. We now have a Video

Wuuu Huuu, we now have a video. Sounds good Tom remember at the field in forward flight she sounds even more like a turbine. Just you wait untill you have the hirobo Mrb 3 blade conversion set changing it to a true scale 3 blade model like mine. Have not flown mine cant wait to see and hear it go. Bet it will be way cool. Take care. Mike.

yaa hoo video of my pride and joy..the Lama

Thank you so very much Chuck. This is a testiment to your great engineering and a good idea come to me a year ago. Wow, and to think we test flew the helicopter without any rotor stabilization. The Hirobo head really adds to the overall scale effect and she looks great in the air and on the ground. AND the sound just awesome. Again thanks Chuck. Mike.

Wind, wind GO AWAY

Soory guys we were going to fly today and capture a forward flight video. The dam wind been blowing here for about last few months. It seems we cant ctch a break. So as soon as possible we will have a forward flight video.

nice .. very nice....you should complete it now with 3 blades tail even ...

A comment I aslo started with a 4025-890 motor 6S but then changed to 4025-740 as HS was too high... ideal with 3 blades is 1600 rpm, and also fly time improved...

The multi blade heads with no stabilization are easy with no wind and just hovering. The challenge begins when there is a wind or you go into forward flight, this introduces disturbances to the rotor disk which will not be delt with. A stabilization system(flybar or electronics) helps you by neutralizing the disturbances. Just be ready on that collective stick. Good luck.

Stabilization

Garyl, , I dont really know too much about stabilization systems and I thought they really help out withthe flying of a heli with multi blades. I have not flown mine with the scale head yet. Too be honest I am a bit nervous about it. So any information about this would be appreciated. Thank.....Mike

Mike they do help a great deal and they make flying any helicopter more fun. You can fly without any stabilization system but its just no fun to me anyway. I edited my post as it could have sounded a little confusing.
I have used the Skookum 360, 720 and the HC3-SX. Both of those systems have very good setup guides in the software and you should have no problem using them.
