I would think that we (RC Aerial Photographers) could form some sort of association like the AMA and get something like this acomplished. There would need to be some rules on pre-flight checks and flying area restrictions, but we could at least be covered in some unfortunate accident.

My flying record to date is pretty spotless as far as crashes goes (knockin' on wood), but I don't think I would fly without insurence. My camera ship weighs in at around 20lbs running 700mm blades, I call it my flying lawn mower, and I shutter to think what it would do to some one's property or person, god forbid there is a failure. So I pre-flight it EVERY time, and that is at the flying field. Besides, as you know, they all have a number. You need to plan on a failure eventually.

But I'll say it again,
Never give up, NEVER SURRENDER!!!

It's worth looking into. I don't know much about bonded insurance but I bet you'd need some pretty hefty cash to put up front.

I'm fairly certain that you need something like 10% up front. But from what I here in this forum, everyone is out of insurence scince 9/11. So it sounds to me like there may be enough bussinesses to make it worth investigating.

I sure would like to do the air photo thing, but if I can't get some sort of insurence, I guess it is just a hobby for me.

I'll do some investigating and post what I find.

Bond

I'm with you on that. If there isn't some kind of coverage to take this thing to the next level (part-time business) then it will remain as a hobby.

I am in the construction field and we as contractors are required to post a bond for our license. This may or may not have anything at all to do with this type of bond, but, I'll call my bonding company and see about a bond for this type business. He's probably going to say <> <>

I'll give it a shot though.

I also agree that there needs to be some sort of professional organization that standardizes level of sevice, competance, etc... This would help provide for the buying power needed to MAKE IT worthwhile for an insurance company to do. Right now seems like a rag tag group of people all doing their own thing.

Id' also be willing to head that program up if there were several others interested. We could work via the net on ideas, etc to get a professional organization going.

So who's with me???

Use a tethered weather ballon.

I don't get why anyone would pay hundreds for a photo from an RC helicopter. I can charter a Cessna and a pilot for under $100 and take a photo myself.

First, we don't charge "hundreds" of dollars (still photography). Second, in a Cessna can you fly 50-100 ft. over a piece of real estate and take photos from all angles? A Cessna is fine if you want to shoot a 500 acre ranch but most of the stuff we do is close in commercial and residential work. Some are shooting commercial video as well. In some cases a mast or even a tethered blimp will work but a heli is still the most effective tool for what we do. Unfortunately it's not always the safest, although there has been no accidents to my knowledge while shooting a job.

Slant,
I am with you on the org thing. I would certainly be willing to give my input and help to develope some sort of standardized saftey guidelines and procedures.

I agree that if we showed some sort of organization, and some standards, we would stand a much better chance of finding an insurence co. willing to take us on.

Lowandslow,
When you went to the AMA's backers with the 15 businesses, what was there hang up on the idea? I think you mentioned that they didn't feel there was enough money in it? I think organizing more people than 15, say 50+, would have a much greater impact. If we also showed that we had some organization to the industry that showed we are all saftey concious, I think this would also help.

I will see if the Bergen crew would be willing to help me ralley up some interest. They should have a pretty extensive list of folks flying the Observer. Chris, if your reading this, what do you think?

Organization

With the help of Darrel (lowandslow) and a few others this professional organization can be a reality. I started last night working on some ideas/guidelines for said organization. I am pumped about getting this going. Please e-mail me privately with your ideas and we can all work together to make this happen.

Malorie,

Throw some ideas my way and I will do the same. Let's make this happen.

I've been told that this was tried before and was a failure. I'm sorry to hear that, but, it will not detour me. If all people across the country/world want to be viewed as professionals then you have to organize. If the NRA didn't exist it would just be a bunch of people with guns running around. But, with their organization they have HUGE political/buying power. Maybe that's a bad analogy, but, you get the idea. In order for us to be strong individually we have to be strong as a team. Sure it will cost you a few extra $'s per year for a membership or whatever. In the long run though you will get that back tenfold if we have the interest/membership. If everybody continues to not really care then YES we will fail.

Sorry for the rant. I get kind of emotional sometimes.

I've submitted some inquries to my companies insurance carrier to see if they have any ideas on this. They are a very large and well respected agency here in Ohio and our company has several million dollars of coverage with them in various areas. I'll keep you posted what I find out and if anyone wants to contact them let me know.

With everyone working on this it may get off the ground.

My boyfreind and I have been checking some other routes also. Our latest effort is SBAM (Small Business Association of Michigan). Supposedly they are set up to help out small businesses, that would make sense considering their name.

We are also checking with a Gov. agency that was set up to help small businesses effected by 9/11.

I'll keep you all posted,
Mal'

Proffesional Organization

Please count me in!!! I'm in the same dilemma about insurance. I'm building a Xcell Gas Graphite for aerial photograghy, but with this lack of reasonable insurance have become discouraged. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help.

Well I've gotten plenty of ideas from people on this board and from other sites. Please keep the ideas coming. I am trying (hard is it is) to get it all compiled into a readable format and run it by everyone that has submitted ideas for the organization.

I think the real key will be to support this organization whatever it is called(?) both financially and physically. If we have a strong enough membership then we can secure reasonable insurance and other things too. Like fighting legislative actions that would be detrimental to this industry. Maybe could also serve as a referral house for clients who need something done in another city where we have an associate. There are literally hundreds of ideas I have floating around in my head. I just have to organize them all.

Please let me know if you have time to compile some of the ideas. I would love the help.

organization efforts

Hello,
I just officially joined this forum today, but I have been following everyone's postings for several weeks now. I have exchanged email with Slant911 and intend to get involved in helping establish a professional organization too. I have gathered and compiled a list of safety info that is posted on several of the existing RC heli photo websites. If anyone has any comments/additions/etc. please email them to me. Thanks!

Personal and property safety always first priority
Never fly over people and never closer than 50 feet
Never fly over property or objects that pose safety risks
No over flight of active roads unless traffic has been officially blocked
Safety briefing meeting all person involved before each flight
Use bullhorn to notify/warn bystanders
Follow AMA national model aircraft safety code
Check list completed and confirmed prior to operation:
Transmitter voltage must be at least 10.0V
Receiver voltage must be at least 5.1V
Perform transmitter range check at 75-100 ft with antennae down
Confirm proper direction and rate of operation of all control surfaces
Check transmitter for proper settings
Radio control system safety measures:
frequency scanner to check for interference.
modern radio equipment operating in PCM mode
onboard battery back-up system
onboard failsafe system to idle engine upon loss of control signal
Display antennae frequency flag (doubles as wind direction indicator)
Never fly in adverse weather conditions:
Rain, snow, sleet or fog
Wind greater than 25 mph
Temperatures below 45 deg or above 100 deg F
Confirm safe and clear launch site and clear climb out at approach corridors.
Onboard strobe light activated prior to take off and remains on during flight.
Two person minimum operating crew so pilot can concentrate on safe flight.
Rigorous preventative maintenance program:
Check all threaded fasteners
Inspect all components for wear and damage
Replace suspect parts
Select multiple emergency alternate landing sites prior to flight

At least these points need to be revised. Once past the initial end-of-charge voltage, a NiCd or NiMH pack spends most of its useful operating voltage at 1.2V per cell under load.

So, the Tx is still good to go at 9.6V. The Rx is fine at 4.8V.

A safe cutoff is probably 1.18V per cell. But, it really depends on the circumstance and personal preference.

Chris Bergen was kind enough to put me in contact with a gentleman who has done this stuff for the movie industry for quite a while.

I will be contacting him tomarrow to find out the peticulars of how he goes about the insurence end of the business. I will post more as I find out more.

Later ,

I'm glad I stirred up the pot here. Looks like we have several people all willing to pitch in. Let's get ourselves organized first then split up tasks and conquer this thing. I'm trying to get an e-mail out today with a compilation of spurios ideas etc... that I have received over the past couple of weeks from individuals interested in making this happen. I will e-mail everyone who expressed interest here and to the indidviduals that made any suggestions.

Thanks everyone. This is going to be great!
