Thanks Greg.

You can see more info on the same web-site (www.carvec.co.uk )

The wobble of the simple camera mount hides a lot of what the gyro stabilisation is doing - but I don't want to get too much into designing the mechanics of a mount.

The next function will be an altitude-hold facility - to make flight by first-person video much easier. However, I'll need a better downlink for that. It looks like I'll have to go illegal .... the 10mW UK limit is a joke. Besides, I think the local residents would much rather watch my heli video than their security cameras

Very cool technology John. I suspect many heli pilots will drool over the flight telemetry monitoring and recording even if they have no interest in making their heli a UAV. Do you plan on marketing a flight telemetry monitoring setup?

Altitude hold sounds like the toughest part of the UAV biz, is that right? Seems like it would be tough to get an accurate setup (one that holds within inches) for a small craft.

Hi Daggit,

I think a pure telemetry system would be a bit too expensive for hobby use at the moment.

I agree that altitude hold for small craft to the accuracy you describe would be very difficult. Things start going wrong when the wind starts blowing. I will be happy to keep within a meter or two of the required height.

I don't see this part being too difficult. The real hard part has been to get a reliable core stability system to fit it into. I've produced the entire system - from inertial sensing to servo driving from scratch.

John:

I went through the web site, great stuff!

I think the neighbors will not only prefer to see your video, they will pay you to fly over their properties for survelliance!

Thanks,

John,
Want to test your awesome system on my heli mount? :-)

I would really love a system like that! Plus my system works pretty good (the gasser mount, not the Raptor 30 one)

Hey Geoff, thats a cool looking machine you've put together.

One thing the camera-mount stabilsation system needs is feedback pots for the servos. This allows the precise positioning for stabilisation. The slewing movement of the Tx sticks still work the same: a small module calculates the servo-drives for this on top of the stabilisation movements.

It's a shame you are so far away: I'd love to see it fly your ship

John,
Its only an Ocean! :-)

I have considered putting the variable resistors on the axles themselves, or on another gear so that the pots are used correctly and the mount can still allow 360 degrees of travel. Its easy enough to do, and its similart to Angelos (spelling?) mount he made for the Raptor 60.

Good stuff.. man I'd love to try your system out! I downloaded the videos of you picking up the heli and moving it and stuff.. really neat. I did the same with a regular non-heading hold gyro (cause I have not sensors in the servos) and it actually worked really great. Never tested in the air cause I had to put the gyro on my Raptor 50.. then I blew a hole in the Earth with that heli.. I'm getting a new gyro (and heli, too) and maybe I'll try the old gyro on the pan axis again.. and use it in the air. I really love your system and if you're ever interested in having me test it, let me know! :-)

Great work,

Gentlemen, I can picture it, live and direct from Hollywood...

'madam, on behalf of a grateful nation, I am sorry to inform you your sons were lost under 30 tons of rubble - we even sent in the model helicopter but no trace could be found before they passed their last breath'

'senator, I understand, you did everything that could be expected, I cannot see the slightest need to sue anyone at all'

John please explain to a mortal what exactly are you on today?

Seriuosly, I'd be facinated to learn that this fell into the realms of acceptable use. I'm sure you'll keep us posted, Good luck!

Julian.

Sounds wonderful, I'd love to see it. Unfortunately, nightshot.wmv is completely black when played in windows media player 7 on my mac. I've had this a lot lately. Are you using the new 9x codec by any chance?

Thx.

John,
It is neat.. but how viable is it to fly a r/c helicopter at night searching for someone over unknown terrain? Or do you have other thoughts for its use? Its definetly cool, just wondering its real-world usage... I'm sure you've got a few.

Hey guys, we were hired to tape a football game last night and one thing they wanted was the team coming out of the Bulldog mascot. They had four or five cameras around the stadium and wanted some aerial b-roll. Anyways, here's a shot of the team coming out. Totally a one-shot try but it turned out pretty good.
