I just bought the card cobra and printed out the parts. I see several here and they look awesome. Any tips for putting it on the Hummer? I know its supposed to need some modification to fit properly. What did you have to do to make yours fit? I hate to try and reinvent the wheel, so if anyone wants to make a small list or any tips that would be nice.

Thanks!

The Cobra is sized to fit a Piccolo. Only two changes need be made to accomodate a H'Bird. The spacing on the LG (front to rear strut dimension) is greater on a H'Bird than a Piccolo. The foward access slots for the LG struts needs to be relocated further forward. Use your H'Bird as a template to get this right. The second mod is required to accomodate the larger diameter main spur gear on a H'Bird. The cutout slots below the stub wings need to be longer to clear this gear. Again use your H'Bird as a template to get it right.
Last fundamental tip. Since the printed parts coming from an inkjet printer are very susceptable to moisture of any kind, be careful not to let a drop of your sweat or the dew off your beer mug land on these parts. Once built, spray the entire fuselage inside and out with a clear matte finish lacquer (available in the craft section of most discount stores incl. WallSmart ) This won't make it posible to fly in the rain but will stop the dreaded blobs on your Cobra's finish from tiny droplets of moisture that appear when doing nose in hovering and launching missile attacks

Also on the Card cobra for the hummer, I had to raise the mechanics about 3/4" so the flybar would clear the aft turtledeck when full rear cyclic is applied.

It turns out that the main gear rides just above the top of the lower fuse section.

What kind of glue did you use to put it together? The instruction manual mentions a type of glue, but i would like to know what to substitute it for in the USA. Specifically what to get at walmart. I live in a really small town so i don't have much choice.

captainhemo

I originaly ordered about 2 weeks ago (just used the pay button and sent no additional email), then a few days later i got an email from him saying my email had bounced (i was out of room in the account) He asked me to give him an alternate email, i did and went ahead and cleaned out my original account. Then a few days later (he said he would be back on a sunday to fill orders) he sent it again to my original account. Did he get my message telling him of the alternate email? I'm not sure. Anyway, make sure your junk mail filter isn't blocking it, and that you have enough room (1308k) in your account.

Go to the WallSmart crafts section ( look out for all the gals!!) and get a small dark gold colored plastic bottle of "Tacky" glue and a card of the cheapest water color paint brushes they have. Use the watercolor brush, kept in a cup of water, to apply small amounts of this glue. If you honk it up, print another sheet of parts and start over

I just paypal'd him and the email showed up in about an hour later.

I used three types of glues:

Elmers blue stick glue. Works well as a contact cement when both surfaces are coated first.

Plain white glue. Good gap filler when working with the poster board. I had some RC77 laying around. Any elmers type glue will work.

Thin CA for those areas that need to set quick and be strong. I had to reglue the tail section to the fuse with CA so it will hold up to the strain of flying.

Any office supply store should have what you need. Walmart would probably have it too.

Where you guys able to find your posterboard. I have only found some so far that is thicker than what i s called for, 5mm instead of 3.5mm which will probably end up adding too much extra weight
Didnt Try wall-matrt yet, maybe they will have it ? Any other ideas ?

Jay - Any frame shop (picture framing) can help as they use the 3mm and 5mm foam board as backing for pictures. A 30"X40" sheet is around $5.00 USD or you can get enough scrap from his throw away bin for free. Just tell 'em what you are building and curiosity generally leads to a donation

Comanche test mule

Getting ready to convert a FlyModel RAH 66 Comanche card model to a micro flyer. Needed a test mule to verify the EDF T/R. This is one of the new GWS EDF 40 H's that can handle 10-12 vdc and it works well with 3s LiPo's. Initial flights are amazing. This little 5 blade DF sounds like an angry Bumble Bee while doing it's job keeping the tail nailed. It is a few mm smaller in diameter and as such is the perfect size for the Comanche I'm working on. after an 18 min flight the EDF motor is only a tad above room temp. I'll hit it with my IR temp probe and report the actual temp in another post. Can we spell long service? Next task is the retracts. If I turn the Airwolf Ikarus retract design around it should accomodate the two mains and tail gear with out a problem. This one will be riding a Razor Micro Heli V2 BL motor as these scale toys always get heavy and can use the added horsepressure.

This little system looks really cool, I'm sure it find lots of uses in the micros projects or even just a mod /upgrade ?
After reading your post I went and looked at the different EDF40H models available and there seems to be quite a few as ther is both the EDF40 and EDF40H

Why are the lower powered units spec'd at producting more thrust thatn the higher powered units ? A EDF40 at 8.4V is spec'd at 84g of thrust while the 12 V is spec'd at 74 gr
Even the 72V seyetems sys 71g. One of these would work well with a 2 scesll LiPo pack wouldnt it ?

Or, is the higher amp draw of thelower pwered units gonna cause prpblems for a 2 cell pack ?
This electric motor stuff really confuses me as I have never really used much in the electrics , only nitro powered in the past. It is tricky learning to figure proper cells/batteries to best suit a particular motor or application, what aare the secrets here /

NIce tail fan hoverup!!!!

That is going to be one sweet little h-bird.
Nice tail housing as well is that cf and did you mold it yourself?
I also wanted to know if you plan to update your card model with the new tail fins?

see here
http://www.modellhubi-ig.de/Hubi_Mo...Sheet_A-092.pdf

Also I was thinking about this the other day, using an electric fan how hard would it be to make a notar

Can't wait to see you comanche in flight, and I hope you do get that camcorder for christmas so we can watch your projects fly

man I got to get into this hobby!
maybe when I retire from grad school I'll be able to

The CF fan tail housing is cut from .016" thick Carbon Fiber fashion plate. The pattern was posted by another heli hobbyist on the Ikarus Piccolo English language forum and I wish I could find the post again to give the designer due credit. All I did was resize it to handle the 40 EDF instead of the 50 EDF it was originally designed for. I will probably go with the new Comanche tailfin design as it ups the "Kewl" factor even more!!

Thanks for the kind words.
