OK, another (hopefully not so dumb) question on x-cell gasser construction:

When I assembled the landing gear I didn't secure the skids because I wasn't sure how. The manual just sez slide the skids in with heat. But the skids are not a tight fit and on top of each brace foot is a built up area for a screw or bolt. This looks like another 'slipstreamed' upgrade. I didn't find any hardware for this. I drilled a small hole through each pad and into the skid but I'm not sure if I should use a 2mm machine screw or something larger. I even thought of inserting something into the skid for the screw to grab like a dowel. Anybody work with this gear?

I am also thinking about only attaching the skids to the front brace. My theory is in a hard landing, the skid can slid in the brace foot and help absorb the shock. I did this on my logo and it has sustained some pretty hard landings without breaking the gear or attach points. But of course the gasser is much heavier.

Yes, the new gear is designed to be screwed together with small sheet metal screws. You can also use pop rivets. All the fasteners do is keep the skids from sliding in the struts.

The old ones were a real pain to get setup just right.

The new gear design should have a round, flat spot on them to insert a small self-tapping screw; pre-drill with a /16" dia. drill through the plastic and into the aluminum skid. [Edit: Use 3/32" drillhole to not stress aluminum strut - See next post by BIGRCR]

I only fastened the rear on mine, allowing the front to slip under load.

All you're looking for is enough penetration of the screw to stop the skid from rotating or sliding.

On the gasser we are talking about the Tuff Strut 1 gear, this is the large diameter gear and are not neccessarily set up the same way as the "new style" Tuff Strut 2's. This gear does have a small round boss on top of the strut so that it can be drilled and screwed. You must still use a bit of heat from a heat gun to get these together in most cases, but unlike the originals, may still move around once cooled. Like several have stated, I too only put screws in one of the struts (the rear).

The secret here is to drill the hole large enough (3/32" hole for the 2.9 mm screws) so that the screw will fasten but NOT stress the aluminum. This is a major cause of failure with these skids when the front strut has been drilled and screwed. If the screw takes a lot of torque to get in, the aluminum may get stressed and cause future failure in the front strut area. A natural helicopter related harmonic will break the front of the skids off if the front screw hole has been drilled too tight and the screw hole is stressed!!! This is another reason not to extend the front of the skids too far forward as the fronts of the skids become a "tuning fork" to harmonic vibration.

Hope this helps!

So I want the screw to grab the plastic but not the skid? Won't that lead to rf interference when the skid and screw vibrate?
The manual calls for only 70mm of skid hanging out the back but this looks ungainly with a lot of skid up front. And like BIGRCR stated, this gives a long arm for vibration (any engineers out there willing to calculate the harmonic for this
I think I'll shove a dowel into the skid and fasten the rear feet to it. This should allow me to tighten the screw enough to prevent vibration. And I'll split the difference on the skid position in the feet.

Wow.. another upgrade I need on my '96 X-Cell...

I didn't know about this one! Is this the secret to 3D flying?

Yes, extend the dowels out the back of the skids and attach them to gimbals on your transmitter. This will limit the range of motion a bit but you will really feel 'connected' with your bird. It is the ultimate feedback mechanism. Plus you'll get quite a workout pirouetting around the field.

Why am always the last to hear about the latest upgrades!!!

If there were more experienced heli pilots around I could learn of these faster!

Thanks for the tips!

No, no, no.....The screw goes through the plastic and into the skid a bit in order to create a "shear" pin. That stops it from rotating and moving.

The screws should extend into the skid but not "bottom-out" on the other side of the skid.
