Hello all
I read somewhere (if I understand it well) that there would be a possibility to take off the starter after the engine has start! I will get a brand new Voyager GS and so I would like, if possible; to take of the pull starter!
So if someone who knows how to do, would be so kind, to give any info about! Perhaps I could get some pics or perhaps there is an existing upgrade kit?
Any help would be gretfull apreciatet!!

there are two guys at my field (Runryder: 'obsessive' and 'rbort') that use
them. I dont know if it's a MinAir thing
(they both fly XL gasser) or who makes
it though.

So what you want to do is use a hex start like on a glow machine?

My Ergo Z230 has the hex starter shaft, and I thought of removing the pull starter and just using the starter shaft. I checked out the possibility by using a cordless drill (18volt had lots of torque, and was already in my tool kit) together with an inexpensive extended hex shaft.

I learned pretty quick that you need to be carefull that the one way bearing may not take the torque of kicking over a gas engine, and it will give you some problems....

Miniature Aircraft has a removable pull start for the Gasser.

Why? To save weight!

It sort of 'unclips' after you start the engine saving several ounces. I was considering it, but since I'm not an extreme flyer, I don't need to worry about every little ounce.

Would like to see a picture....

As I am seriously thinking of putting my Xcell gasser into a BK-117 vario fuse......the Hanson g-23 is NOT gonna take any lip from a hex shaft or torrington bearing starter......and I want to keep the lines intact on the BK. Any help guys??

Also, how strudy IS it....will it handle the extra compression of the Hanson?

I know what you`re looking for. I´ve seen it in the internet too.
It´s not a stupid question. The starter is a heavy part and why do you want to fly it around? You just need it one time and that is on the ground. So it´s a good idea to remove it after starting the engine.

I hope, I remember where I´ve seen that system.

rbort has one of these removable starters. He said it removes about 4.7 ounces from the heli.

MinAir has these, but I can't find them in their online directory.

I think it would be very easy to make. In fact, I had imagined making one before I saw the one that MinAir has.

To fabricate your own, you would change the tapered head screws which hold the aluminum back plate of the starter to the chassie with some shoulder bolts, or normal bolts and use a bushing and washer. Then cut some 'keyhole' slots in the backplate. This would allow the backplate to twist off without any tools. The only thing left behind on the heli would be the three shoulder bolts.

I would think that this would be pretty easy to do yourself. I believe the MinAir kit is basically a new backplate with the keyhole slots in it and the appropriate shoulder bolts, or regular bolts with some bushings and washers.

Go to Miniature Aircraft at http://www.x-cellrchelicopters.com/, and look for part # 105-102.

I checked...

105-102 is the manual set for the gas X-Cell!!

What you want is 105-104 "Quick Release Starter Adapter for X-Cell Gas'

Here is is from Rick's super site:

See, just as I would have designed it myself! Well, I did in my mind before I saw the MinAir part!

Hmm.. now you have me thinking!!

The new G231 that I just purchased came with a large square backplate with the pull starter mounted to it. The original one I had from my MinAir kit was trimmed down to make it very small.

With very little work (where is my file?) I can create this myself using that extra backplate that I have!

By the way, Rick's sells the full kit for a little over $25 USD.

MinAir also lists the backplate and spacers separatly for someone who wants the parts:

105-104A Removable Recoil Starter Plate 1
105-104B Black Plastic Spacers

But the full kit is part number 105-104 as shown in the picture above

I just looked at my Gas X-Cell.

Looking at the picture of this MinAir plate, I would guess that they have you drill some holes in the metal frame rails next to the engine. The bolts and bushings and such then mount to these holes.

On operation this unit will slide onto the bottom frame rails. Then you remove it after starting your engine.

If you forget to remove it, it could fall off in flight!

Or if you somehow leave it at home, you won't be able to start your engine.

Estimates are that it saves you about 4.7 Ounces. I weighed my pull starter alone and would estimate the total weight savings would be about 130 to 150 grams so the 4.7 ounces is about right. That's a little less weight than one main blade (depending on what you are flying)

4.7oz it is

Hey guys:

It is exactly 4.7oz weight savings, I measured it with an accurate postage scale measuring the difference between all the parts that you take out and all the parts that you put back in. (nuts, bolts and washers included). Call me anal!

In any case, well worth its cost and you will "feel" a little difference in flight.

Thanks for all kind response, so my last question to all the GG (Gasser Guru) is, is it wasting money or is it a good think to do?? I guess that with this upgrade I save more than 130 gr (sorry I use European measurements)!! ;-))
Y was believing (because gassers looks that much strong/heavy to me) that the pull starter was 250gr for minimum!!

I don't think it's a lot of money for a savings in weight, if that is what you are looking to do.

Forget the removable method!

I tried it on my ScaleHouse 412. It pops out easily on the 2nd or 3rd pull and is very inconvenient to mount it back because you have to tilt the heli and look for the mounting holes. Sometimes on hard pulls, it pops out unexpectedly, risking damage to the scale details under the body. So I decided to leave the original mounted under the body.

Great idea, but bad execution.
