Mikado 250 and 450 Flybarless Head Conversions - Woohoo!

Interesting path Mikado decided to take...

Trex 250 - Grip arm extensions for the standard Align grips and a double-sided swash driver! Cool!

Trex 450 - What appears to be a Rigid Gaui head with Mikado plastered all over it. FORTUNATELY, they also include a correct double-sided swash driver as well.

I have the Gaui head on my Mini Titan and I love it, minus the swash driver. Hopefully Mikado specified longer screws to keep the blade grips on because the Gaui version comes loose quickly.

No reason to reinvent what isn't broke I guess. What was broke, they fixed...

hrm...i was hoping to see shiny aluminum trex 700 head upgrade to match the LE. The black upgrade has been out of stock so long i was hoping they had an announcement for '10

if it ain't broke…break it.

The 450 FBL is identical to the Gaui 5mm head except for the improved swash driver. I really like the Gaui 450 head. It is a wonderful design. I wonder if you can just buy the swash driver separately? I'm pretty sure the Gaui head will be cheaper without the "Mikado" logo on it, but I would like to replace my one armed "vibe-o-matic" Gaui swash driver with something balanced.

As for the 250 FBL head, I really can't tell what is Align and what is Mikado.

250 head

Looks like Mikado machined some extensions for the grips and made a swash driver..proven design ...they work well.

this is basically the same setup as the conversions they make for the 500/600/and 700 align machines

I think I like my MicroHeli 250 FBL head better. Besides, the Microheli head comes with the 2 aluminum spacers to allow the mini-V-bar to fit inside the 250 frames.

but, is it the typical soft mH metal? anyone doinked one to find out yet?

that's the only thing that scares me away from mH bling.

The MH head is indeed soft metal. That is the biggest problem with it. Perhaps the Mikado head will work better if it is not too expensive. Using the stock Align parts is a good idea. Still, you need the MicroHeli aluminum supports to open the back of the frame up so that you can install the V-bar. I wonder, does Mikado offer anything to open the back of the heli frame? The V-bar is about 2mm too wide to fit inside the frames without modification.

While I've referred to the Gaui swash driver as the vibe-o-matic, I've also suggested that Microheli parts are indeed made of a special rare earth type of aluminum referred to as "Alumibutter"... It's so "superior", it makes you makes you say "I can't believe it's not Alumibutter", when referring to other aluminum parts...

My guess, the Mikado swash driver will be provided by Gaui (or their Mfg.) as a separate item. I can't believe they wouldn't want to take advantage of the large user base that would run, not walk, towards an alternative to the cell phone vibrator wanna be.

Since I already have a Gaui head, if I am forced to buy another one just to get the swash driver, I'll buy an Outrage, RJX, Rave or other option before I spend twice for the Gaui. I don't like it enough to pay over $120 for a silly head (60 for my current one + 60 for a new one)...

As noted above, the Trex 250 is simple and elegant. The support bars can probably be sourced from MH if they aren't included in a Mikado kit. For the 450, we finally get the driver we've been begging for. Wooohooo. I can't wait for next spring...

You know you can buy a separate "vibe-o-matic" from Readyheli for something like $20? You don't need to buy a new complete FBL set. Something tells me the Mikado version will be the same. But if not, then you're right that it would be better to buy a Rave head or something else.

BTW: The vibe-o-matic works pretty well if you take the complete head off and balance it on a high point balancer. I added 4 layers of blade balancing tape to the opposite blade and now the vibes are gone.

hmmm, interesting that they show the 250 head set up for trailing edge control.

It is trailing edge, isn't it? But you could easily flip that around to leading edge control.

Ha, maybe now more people will adopt Gaui head now that the Mikado name is on it. I've never had an issue with the "Vibe-O-Matic" swash driver, but this new one ought to seal the deal for anyone who believed that it would cause them issues.

I think the simplicity of the Gaui head is the best design yet. There are only 3 parts to the head held together by 2 bolts. There are no dampeners. No spindle shaft. No thrust bearings. And yet it works perfectly. I LOVE my Gaui FBL head.

The Gaui swash driver is OK, but you really need to balance the entire head (which only takes a few minutes to do). A double arm swash driver will be better.

1+ for the Gaui 5mm FBL head.

I only wish Gaui made a 3.5mm FBL head too to fit the Trex 250. I've thought before about trying to drill out their 3.0mm FBL head, but it would probably be more trouble than it is worth.
