What would happen if an engine exeeds its practical rpm (as stated in specification)?

One of my helis made a brief, strange high pitch sound almost every second during idle-up accompanied by slightly wagging tail, but not during normal mode. I doubt if the engine was overspeeding. It was an old OS 32F-H in that heli with practical rpm 2,000 -17,000 (compared with 22,000 of newer 32SX-H).

OS 32????

It almost sounds like you had a lean condition caused by the throttle and pitch curve. If you have too much throttle and not enough pitch it can lean out and do what you are saying. If you make the throttle and pitch curves parralell on the + side then you can reduce pitch at center stick and add throttle to make chopper hover when you hit idle up switch from a hover.Just a thought.
