Ok. I'll try again when I get home.

The only thing is that the crankcase needs to be smoking hot for the sleeve to slide in... Really hard to work with.

I'll practice some with the piston off so I can get it in easy later...

You can do it. I've done dozens of YS 80's and the sleeve is always a little tight. The best way is to put the sleeve in a plastic bag and put it in the freezer overnight. Then do it in the morning.

Jack, your on the right track, you have to oil up the piston, ring, and sleeve with oil, then put the piston in the engine, and make sure the ring is lined up with the pin, and as you slide the liner into the engine/piston, slightly rotate the sleeve as you push it into the engine, and rock it back and forth until the sleeve slides in. your almost there, your looking for a part of the procedure that isnt there. this is all that you have to do to get the sleeve to slide onto the piston. nothing else. you dont need to touch the ring with anything at this point. you dont need to get to the piston at this point, just oil it all up until it slides in, the oil will burn off later. Use 2in1 oil, or whatever you have. as long as you have the ring lined up with the little pin in the groove, your good to go, push on it until it slides in, remember to rock the liner a little at first, back and forth. If you feel the need to heat up anything, heat the case up, then oil it up, and with a cold liner and piston, slide and rock until it goes in. the only thing that heating it at this point is going to do, is help the liner slide into the case, the piston and ring are still gonna be the same trouble to get into the liner. good luck

VERY FRUSTRATED!

I am almost giving up. It is incredibly annoying to put this liner back.

It only slides smoothly when the crankcase is burning hot. By then the back bearing wants to slide off.

At the same time the piston does not clear the crankcase at TDC so I cannot get to the ring and compress it with my fingers (which would be impossible anyways since the whole thing is smoking HOT!). The liner simply refuses to go over the ring.
WD Oil does not help since it practically evaporates on contact...

This is brutal!

I've only rebuilt YS 50's, and yes it is difficult at first, like most things once you have done it you'll wonder what all the fuss was about. Heat the crankcase, I go to about 250F, put the liner in a plastic bag and put it in the freezer, 20 minutes is more than enough, then quickly line everything up, I use a silicon oven glove to hold the crankcase and it will slip together with relative ease.
I put a mark on the outside bottom of the liner which lines up with the notch at the top, it helps line everything up with the pin when you put it together.
I've done it 3 or 4 times now, it's a bore but it gets easier every time.
Make sure the liner is pushed fully home, it does get tight as it bottoms out. The first time I did it and put the head back on I realised the liner wasn't far enough in.

oil oil oil you cant use to much. patients and a light touch will go a lot further than heat and anger. the sleeve and case are machiened to be very close tolerance and have to be perfectly aligned to slip together. luck to ya but you dont need it!

Take about a half cup of fuel and leave it out in the air let the nitro and methanol evaporate and presto you have very good oil for assembly. might take a day or two but after a while you will notice it thicking up at which point its good to use. Nothing I have tried has worked better.

I sort of gave up... I am looking into finding some local pilots that have experience with YS.

I got really frustrated...
