I have broken in several OS50 hypers and I am completely new to the YS50 though have broken in YS91SR's! Anyways MY needle valve positions are 1.25 out on low end, and 2 turns out on the main! It is definitely running rich because it is spitting fuel out of the exhaust! Anyways usually on all the OS engines I have broken in the Ring becomes a difference color, and also the top of the piston! I have run 2.5 Tanks through this YS50st just sitting on the ground idling.. I usually do 2 tanks and then hover for 2, then light flying around/sport flying! Then after that start tuning 2 clicks out at a time after that! This is how I always did it on my OS50 Hyper's and they ran great! This is what the engine looks like after 2.5 tanks of idling.. It seems to be running lean on the look side but it is really running rich! Should I just continue to break it in? Oh, I am running Rapicon 30% fuel and a OS8 glow plug!

Thanks!

The manual says to start idle needle at 1.0 turns, main 1.5 turns. Try that as even at these settings it's a little rich after break-in on mine. I found out that this engine is similar but different than the .91SR.

A friend broke one in this summer and ran it like you are for 2 gallons. then started leaning it down, keeping a watch on temps of the back plate with a touch of the finger. He has had great success with his.

I'm having a tough time with mine as well. It was suggested to me to run more fuel through it before leaning it out. I have about six tanks through it and I was told to do another six to ten. I'll try it!

On my YS50 with 30% nitro fuel I had the high needle out at about 1 turn, and had the low set for a good idle, I also was running an A3 plug. Watch your temps but don't worry too much about them, the YS 50 likes to be just over 200 degrees where the typical O.S. 50 likes 190-200. You're going to like that motor!

I ran another six tanks through mine today and it finally started behaving like an engine. I have the low end 1 1/3 turns out and the needle at 2 1/4 turns out and I have good smoke and 190 - 200 directly on the head and 170 - 180 on the cyl-head interface area.

More importantly it responds correctly to adjustments. I can raise or lower the temps based on leaning or richening the mixture. Tusday and yesterday it didn't do this.

So, we'll keep running tanks and hopefully we'll get there!

Is it me or is 2 gallons a LOT of fuel for break in!! I broke my OS 50 in in 4 tanks and was tearing it up by the 5th and I have put 10 gallons through it with no issues. Temp is always great and it performs flawlessly. I just put a new OS 55 in the machine and it took me 8 tanks to break it in because of the mid needle valve but by the 9th tank, I was punching holes in the sky.

2 gallons may seem like a lot, but I would rather brake one easy and have long life than risk leaning out early and possibly reducing life. to each his own.

Yeah it's a lot. OS break in was more of a tank or two. But this YS is taking forever.

lol, So totally I ran it 3 tanks idling on the ground rich, two Hovering flights at the same setting (2 turns out) 5th and 6th flight I leaned 1 click every 2 minutes making sure temp was good! So it took me 6-7 tanks after tuning for power to break in the engine! Making great power, piro tic tocs are efortless and 4 point tic tocs as well! Back plate is luke warm and the head is 155 after a hard flight! So for those who says it needs 12+ tanks and 2 gallons to break in... crazy.. lol Video to come

Around here the YS50 is known to be quite a headache. Lots of people have/had problems with them.
They either run brilliant straight out of the box or are the biggest pain in the a$$ you can imagine.
Mine is one of those troublesome ones. First it didn't like 20% Nitro so much which is what we run around here mainly. So I upped it to 30% which certainly improved it a bit.
It is so touchy on the needles that just a couple of clicks make a major difference to temperature.
At this stage 3 clicks will give it a temperature variation of 20F while still in the pretty rich range.
At 180F, it's so rich that you see raw fuel out of the exhaust and the backplate is fairly warm.
So despite 10 tanks plus, it's still not run in well enough for the temperature to become more stable.

What altitude ?

Maybe you're over-compressed.

About sea level.
It doesn't feel over-compressed and all my other YS's are fine. Compression is below my TT redhead which has had an extra shim installed. Glowplug element isn't distorted either.
I have 4 YS's and so far it's been a 50/50 hit and miss affair with them.
Two of them ran like sawing machines straight out of the box (with proper run in period) and two (this includes the YS50) turned into real pigs.
The other trouble one was a YS61ST-2, by the time it eventually got sorted, it was close to the end of it's life.
So he has got two options..persist (like me) and finally get it sorted, but expect a long road...
or
Send it back, while it's still under warranty and get the Supplier/Manufacturer to sort it.

Ok Here is a video on the 8th tank, Its broken in good. Started at 2 turns for break in and now at 1-1/2 for tuned. I really like the power and with the Head temp at 155F and the outside temp 70F the back plate is just luke warm!
