You guys see these new Futaba servos yet? Serial Bus. You'll be able to chain servos together on a single receiver port, and channels will be programmed per servo on the bus, and not per physical connection.

Very interesting.

Thanks for posting this. Very interesting idea which, amongst other things, could simplify wiring on our helis. I notice that the receiver has 6 conventional outputs as well as the S.Bus so it looks like this is intended to complement/extend existing setups rather than replace them

Serial bus servos are very popular in robotics. There are a number of expensive but small humanoid robots that basically consist of about twenty servos and a microcontroller. When you have multiple limbs like a "pelvis, knee, ankle, toe" assembly, it's much more convenient to wire them in a serial bus than to have individual wiring to each stage of the limb.

Looks to me as if this serial bus stuff would work much better with the giant scale guys. Most of them now run 2 servos on elevator, 4 on ailerons, 4 on rudder (have you seen those pull/pull systems with 4 inline servos they are using). I'm not sure how much benefit they would be to standard heli setups. I'm sure the scale guys could use them.

and it costs more than the 14 channel receivers ..... unless I am hard up for space on my heli I think I am going to stick with the conventional until the price is 'real' .

I had seen these before, and the reason I went back and found the link again, is because of another post here in the main forum about servo wiring, and the cleanliness thereof.

Well, I was thinking, theoretically, the application is supposed to be that you chain these servos together, which could give a few more options of wire routing than hanging them all directly off the receiver. Maybe they're going to come out using some sort of "bus cable" logic, that will allow you to run one cable with multiple connectors on it through the frame of the heli. You could cut the servo pigtails down to say, 1-2 inches at the most. Run that one bus cable along the inside of the frame, plug your litte servo pigtails into that, and bam, superclean install.

Hmmm . . . the potential for a single cable failure to take out the entire airborne system would appear to be a risk that they may have a hard time getting past . . . . .

But with multiple cables (current systems) a single cable failure on a swash servo is a nonrecoverable failure. So on a CCPM swash you have three times the likelyhood of failure/crash over a single cable system.

Connectors are the true evil, wires don't fail nearly as often as a connector can pull loose or develop oxidation and open a contact.
Even if there is a single wire from the Rx, each servo still has a plug in addition to the plug on the radio. Unless, you hard wire your servos into a custom made harness. Something to be said for that. Makes repair a pain, but it would be more reliable, eliminating all the connectors.
A bit lighter as well, given no excess wire or connector pins/housings.

Just been looking at the PC interface software for the GY520 and what do I find? Answer, a parameter called "Channel" which is explained thus:

" Channel
Initial value: Rudder=2, Gain=3
Specifies the rudder channel and gain channel numbers connected to the receiver. It is effective at S-Bus connection.
"

So, it looks like the GY520 is already S.Bus enabled!!

if you read the label, the GY520 clearly states that it is S.BUS compliant:

Never noticed that! Not even sure my 520 has that label - it's been hidden inside a stratus for months so I'll have to look

Proably most of the Rx are allready enabled for sbus. The problem are the servos. Im guessing you need to get new servos. The gyro is a nice feature so you can have a singel wire going to the gyro.

Hi guys

It would appear that you would need one wire between your Rx and the gyro 'hub' and then all the servos plug into this hub. Would make wiring nice and neat.
