So you set the head speed for mid stick using a tacho (I use the tail boom sort), by adjusting the throttle curve at mid.

then set the rest of the throttle curve for all the other stick positions.

But you can't use a tacho for anything really much past mid stick (either way) since the heli would either be in the ground or high in the clouds before you get a chance to read the tacho.

I'm therefore setting head speed for mid stick using a tacho, then setting the rest of the throttle curve by listening to the sound of the heli and also by feel. is this how the rest of you are doing it?

I guess so, but would be interested to know if there are other knacks

Using an optical tach, which measn you're looking through the thing while you are standing on the ground, makes it very easy.

Get the headspeed you want in a hover, climb out while someone is looking through the tach, looking for variation in headpseed. You can do the climbout at 3/4 stick, full stick, anything in between.

Using your tailbom tach, well, what you described is probably your best solution.

my Boom tach is only OK for checking HS in hover
