Look at the effect inflation has on money's value. Since 1900, the dollar’s purchasing power has dropped to 4 cents. That means a devaluation of 96%.
If this trend continues, the 500 dollar gift would be about 20 bucks value 100 years from now. No, it wouldn't be 100 years. Maybe it'd be 18. So maybe it'd be worth 300 dollars.
But still.
So you take what is valuabe today, give it to a baby so that it could sit and devalue for him to use when he turns 18.
This is the equivalent of taking 500 dollars out of your wallet. Take 200 dollars and burn it. Then give 300 dollars to your grown child. That's all this program would be worth. And some 18 year olds would use it for education. Some would use it to buy drugs. And even more would use it to party. If you gave me 500 bucks when I turned 18 it would have ended up going into my car.
Some program.
