companies are able to show profit and boost their bottom line because they are laying people off.

Laying your workers off is not a good way to show a profit...

There might be some that do that. But, the lions share of them will lay folks off because of lack of work. Or, they may do that just to thin the crowd out a bit and become a bit more productive in harder times and increase the margins in order to survive. Most will offer a cut in hours to keep their personal and not have to go through the expense of training new folks when they need them again.

If a company continues to lay off just purely to show a profit, they will pay a high price for that in the end game. What goes around, comes around.

a bit more productive? Companies lay people off who then can't go spend the money they aren't earning to buy said companies products. If enough companies do that then we're in trouble.

I'm not insinuating that companies are laying people off for the sole purpose of boosting their bottom lines but the mere fact that they are laying people off WILL effect the bottom line and the effect will likely be a positive one.

Yeah, its called survival. That is very positive. That is any companies primary responsibility to itself. Some make it, some don't.

Dennis, you are missing the overall point.

Our leaders are pointing to the better bottom lines due largely to layoffs lately as a sign that our economy is improving, ignoring the fact that the ranks of the unemployed keep swelling.

Yeah well, we all know better. The only job growth is in the federal government sector. Not the private sector. The job loss in the private sector has slowed. But, you are correct. We are still loosing jobs.
