Hi, the saga of my spectra g continues.
Today I went flying with my spectra g after "shelving it" for a week or two.
I reset the carb mixture, fitted new gaskets, and a felt clunk in the tank.
Had one flight, and it was perfect- the best it ever has flown!!
On the second tank for some reason I left the pull start on and whist hovering inverted there was a loud bang, the heli pitched up,bits flew off but it recovered and I managed to land it even though it was shaking badly.
On closer inspection the pull start fell off, broke both main blades, pulled the boom supports out, chipped the canopy, and exploded into 3 bits.

I suppose it could have been alot worse, but I am still into another set of SAB's and will check the main shaft, feathering spindle etc for damage.

At least it is easily repairable, and I will be able to top start it until I get another pull start.

Will post pictures later tonjght when I unload it from my van.

Bummer, but great save, you got off lite.

I only left mine one once and it came off while flipping and somehow cleared everything I was very lucky but learned the lesson

Sorry to hear that, were you inverted at the time, I thought the pull start would have just fallen to the ground?

Perhaps you pulled it off the shelf a week early, only joking
That’s bad news mate, hope you get it up and running again soon, I will keep my good news to myself and not make you feel any worse than you already do

I only like to fly gassed up

Yeah those pull starts usually just drop down like a stone when they come loose.

I forgot mine was still on the other week and ended up spending 3/4 hour looking for it across the field.

Sorry to hear of your problem anyway - there seem to be quite a few of us who have had or are having bad luck with their Spectras.

Touch wood (as they say) mines good at the moment.

damage report

Not too bad, feathering shaft and main shaft look ok, tail boom supports re glued, and when I locate some new blades, should be flying again.

..not a mistake I've made (yet)..but might be worth bonding a weighted piece of ribbon to the pullstart so it's obvious on takeoff??

Do like i id mount it on permentet. I i don't have to worry aboutmine if i could just get it to fly. I'm very slow and i get side tracked easy. I know some people say well it to heavy to leave on but great day it's not that heavey. It alreadys weights 15 poundswants a few more OZ'S, I have a little bit left to mine and it will be ready for a rebreak in. I still have to put a few more balls on with holes thru them. I'm rying everything i can do not crash. If any of of you ae looking for MA parts try New england helis.com . He has very good prices amd a lot of part in stock. Sorry to see it happend to you.Go to my gallery and you will see haow i made mine.

Sorry to hear about your incident Ally. Do yourself a favor and just lock the thing in place. Yeah, I know some people are going to argue that it just adds more weight, yada, yada, yada. . . But like smallplanes says, you're really not going to notice a big weight difference, and the piece of mind is worth it. Here's how I locked mine in place:

This mod took all of 15 or 20 minutes and has worked flawlessly on my Spectra-G. I used a large chunk of plastic I had laying around, but you could cut the block out of just about anything and it will still probably work. I never worry about my starter falling off anymore (which it did several times before), and it's still very easy to remove if you need to for repair.

For those who would prefer NOT to deal with the removable starter, this is a simple solution. Good luck.

Yep, I permenatly mounted mine. No 3D for me so the little wieght isn't even noticable. Two little locking straps so it cannot rotate out of place.

If you bolt the starter in place, you risk whacking it on the ground if you land too hard. There is not much clearance between the starter and the ground. You can always buy the TuffStrut I gear which are about an inch taller to give you more clearance.

"Some are going to argue..."

Here I come! Yeah I say don't make it permanent as a solution to it not falling into the blades.

If you're making it permanent because you don't want to deal with putting it on and taking it off, then ok.

You will feel the extra weight of the starter during the hang time of the autorotation, I personally noticed a little extra hang time on my 1005 after I upgraded to the removable pullstarter plate. To most people it is definately insignificant anyways, so do whatever is best for you

You certainly lucked out you were able to land it after the blades blew apart. I always wondered what would happen if the starter fell through the blades, glad it landed for you and not exploded in the air.

I'm sure Raja is right but i like mine mounted. I don't do autos unless i have no other choice so hopefully it will be ok. t is close to the ground but i think if you where to land hard it would not hurt the pull start. If you put taller gear on it it will only add a little more weight. Just do what you want thats what this hobby is about.

I think the stock Tuff-Strut II that come with the helicopter look too short anyways. Taller gear look better in addition to protecting the bottom of the helicopter (and the tail).

Im with Raj on this issue I like mine removable.

My reason is not the extra weight but were the extra weight is,as low as it could be. I wish we could have the motor higher as well would fly even better.

I think it flies better with it off.
