That unit is only good up to 8s tho so for large electrics it is not suitable.

but, using two of them (one on each 5s or 6s pack) and isolated with diodes could make them a possibly viable solution.

Yup, that would work. Fergus, remember you're only tapping into one pack.

But why use something that is so damn RF noisy????
Agreed, The Western Robotics Hercules BEC it is noisy as you say and they warn about it being so.
It is not an issue with the 2.4ghz and it's location is well out of the way so it does not interfere with any other components.

The voltage reduction through the Step-Down tail voltage regulator is .8v to bring 6v down to 5.2v for the Rx side of the system.
The #WRL-STVR version has an LED so you can see the power is on the system.

Any reason why nobody has mentioned the Koolflight UBEC? Anything wrong with them. I believe tabbytabb, along with a few other veterans are using them in a redundant configuration (with diode).

Is it possible to make a backup of the BECs, like adding a regular Nimh pack so it engages if the BEC fries?

When it comes to weight, i dont think 2-300 gr extra in regular Nimh packs would matter THAT much anyway for large electrics like MJ2, i mean for saving weight over a BEC system.
I think instead youll increase the chances of a potential failsource allot more than a regular Nimh system, at least the feeling i get buy reading posts about BECs failing, frying etc.
And of course, now all you will say, it never happened to me

just use a diode on the output of the pack so your not inputting voltage to it from the BEC and connect it to a spare channel on the Rx. You have to equate in the voltage drop from the diode.

If your doing the "electric tail" mod then you would have the redundant BEC from the tail rotor so the odds of both BEC's going out are as good as you switching to Lipo's

The UBEC's from Koolflight are supposed to be work well too. I was going to use them based on there reputation, but after the first email he answered about adding the diodes to them he wouldn't answer anymore so I went with Western Robotics as they were prompt and good with info when I emailed them. In two years they've answered every email long after the sale.

Chris, you can use two UBECs and connect it to your LIPO packs... LOL

...as mentioned several times here... use a diode... they're easy to make.
